Make Dropbox stop consuming all of the shell icon overlays

Question

After having my TortoiseGit shell icons stop working, I had to find the registry hack involved with deleting the 10 unwanted shell icons DropBox uses up.  And the problem came back days later even though I'm pretty sure DropBox wasn't even running in the background.  It seems to be a very long running annoyance that this behavior cannot be turned off in DropBox.

I only installed the Dropbox client because the web version is too glitchy, but if I'm going to have to fix this problem every week I'll just uninstall the client.

I've seen that posted in response to similar complaints from years ago on this forum, going back about 6 years.  I won't be expecting much and will likely just uninstall the client

The problem with that is that my source code repo is OUTSIDE of the scope of Dropbox's synchronization.  Dropbox globally takes up so many shell icon overlay slots that other programs system-wide can't make use of them.  The Dropbox shell icons are completely unneeded in my case and only serves to be an annoyance as I've described.  What I and the several other people who have complained about this want is the ability to turn off this bad behavior.
