Environment
- macOS 15.7.8
- Dropbox 256.4.3790
- Finder Column View
- Finder automatic column sizing enabled
Issue
Finder automatically sizes columns wide enough to display filenames. However, after Dropbox status badges (green checkmarks, cloud icons, etc.) appear, some filenames become truncated with ellipses even though the column width does not change.
I have a screen recording showing the behavior. I can provide this privately to a Dropbox employee.
Reproduction
- Open a Dropbox folder in Finder Column View.
- Allow Finder to auto-size the column. (In Tahoe, this is in Settings. In Sequoia, you can use the following Terminal command)
defaults write com.apple.finder _FXEnableColumnAutoSizing -bool YES
killall Finder - Observe that all filenames fit.
- Wait for Dropbox status badges to appear.
- Observe that one or more filenames become truncated with ellipses.
- Manually widening the column restores visibility.
Observations
- The truncation appears immediately after Dropbox badges are rendered.
- The column width remains unchanged.
- The filenames fit before the badges appear.
- The filenames no longer fit after the badges appear.
- The issue does not occur in non-Dropbox folders where Dropbox badges are absent.
- The issue appears reproducible across multiple folders.
Another user appears to have reported the same behavior on macOS Tahoe:
