Dropbox 237.4.5655 does not show correct syncing status.

After updating to this new version, the new status columns show sometimes the wrong status with directories.

A directory may show Sync Pending, while all underlying files and directory show the green checkmark.

The Dropbox item on the taskbar shows Up to date.

I tried also signing out and in and more, but that did not solve the problems.

However I now solved it:
The problem turned out to occur only in directories with pictures in it.
I paused sync.
I did a chkdsk dropboxdrive: /f. This command asked to dismount the drive because handles were open. I let it dismount.
chkdsk did not show any errors.
I resumed sync. I saw a lot of desktop.ini files sync'd.
After all was sync'd, all errors were gone.

I did the same on my other Windows 11 Pro machine, and with the same method all errors were gone also.

Hey @FrankMes, let's see what we can find together about that!

I know it might sound trivial but are you certain there are no subfolders, or files that might be getting synced when this happens? Have you manually checked all directories inside your Dropbox folder?

Also, do any other third-party apps have access to your Dropbox files? If you could also send me a couple of screenshots of the behavior that you mentioned, I'd appreciate it since I'd like to have a visual too.

Hi @Megan Yes I checked all files and directories, also looked for hidden or system files, and all are synchronized and offline available.

I have this behaviour only with directories, not with individual files.

I do not use OneDrive or other third party software.

The above is on my up-to-date Windows 11 Pro machine. I also updated Dropbox in my up-to-date Windows 10 machine, and that has no problem.

On another Windows 11 Pro machine I have the same behaviour, but not Sync pending, but the open checkmark in stead of the solid green checkmark (with all underlying files and directories solid green checkmark).

Do you have any screenshots of the sync status, along with the icons you see next to your folders? You can attach them here by clicking the camera-like icon when replying back to me, or you can simply copy and then paste them here.

It might sound trivial, but can you try signing out of the app, and then back in?

I am glad to see your issue is resolved- incorrect sync status indicators can definitely be confusing, especially when everything looks like it should be working properly. These little glitches can happen from time to time, so it’s great that things are appearing normally again. I like the feature to have directories local on a few PC's (in my case 3), while this directories are 100% synchronized between the 3 PC's. I use selective sync, because not all underlying directories are needed on all PC's. One of the PC's has no selective sync, so an offline backup of this PC is enough to have a backup of all the files, regardless of which of the 3 PC's updated/created the files. (I do use another program for making offline backups).
On the PC's I do not use Dropbox online-only files.

On my Android phone I do use the files online-only, and I use camera uploads.

Dear Dropbox Team and @FrankMes,

Thanks for this thread. I am encountering similar issues with my sync icons (status in detailed view on Windows Explorer, Windows 11). Unfortunately, the fix above did not work. When I try to run chkdsk C: /f I get an error stating:

I restart the computer, chkdsk runs. However, I still have the same issue with Dropbox. Specifically files show the incorrect status icon despite dropbox being up to date:

Any suggestions or help? I need to reliably know the status of my files in order to use Dropbox.

My method does not work because you have your Dropbox folder on the C: drive. Chkdsk cannot dismount the boot / C: disk. I would always advise to have the Dropbox folder on another drive than C:.

Do you have this problem only with directories with pictures (.jpg files) as I had?
