Unable to see the cloud icons on my folders after the app's latest update.

Question or Issue

I put all my files on online only and usually I'm able to see the cloud icon on top of the files/folders here but I can't view them anymore after the latest update, is this a feature or bug?

If you were updated to the Dropbox for Windows update, the status icons no longer appear directly on your file icons. They're now shown in a separate Status column in the Details view, as shown below, or next to the files in the Icon view. The status icons are no longer displayed in the left-hand navigation.

This is a change enforced by Microsoft when using their Cloud Files API.

Hi @James3410, let's look into this!

The arrows shown on the right top part of your files seem to be unrelated to Dropbox.

Would you mind clarifying the app's current syncing status? You can find both by hovering your mouse over the little Dropbox icon in your taskbar next to your WiFi.

If you right-click a file in your Dropbox folder, do you see all the expected Dropbox options?

Lastly, I know this might sound trivial, but can you try signing out of the app and then back in?

I think the sync is up to date, and everything is normal when I right click. Tried signing in and out, didn't fix the issue

After some research I found that the two blue arrows facing each other is because of NTFS compression to safe disk space

fyi my files is all online only, usually when I close my file explorer app and then open it again, a couple files inside one of my dropbox folder start downloading into my device. Any way to fix this?

Hey @James3410!

Do the files become available offline when you open your Dropbox folder, or do they simply have the blue syncing icon next to them?

Is there a third party system accessing these files? I'm asking because there might be some processes on your computer that may look at files that you may not have manually opened, in order to fulfill those requests, Dropbox syncs the files.

Examples of such include backup services, antivirus, recently used file lists or third-party applications that monitor files in general.

Keep in mind that you can turn available offline files into online-only by simply right-clicking on them. If there are apps that constantly look at your files, they may come back as local, just as you described.

For this reason, try temporarily quitting or disabling apps systematically, until you see that the issue is resolved. The last app that you closed when the behavior in question no longer occurred may be the one performing this action.

This update is horrible. There's no way for Dropbox to work around this?? Now I have another column taking up space in my folders.

The Status column is a function of the Microsoft Cloud Files API. The File Provider API from Apple is the similar for Macs. The APIs allow sync services like Dropbox to better integrate into the operating system, and the Status column allows for a more unified experience regardless of the sync service you use.

If you wish the status icons to appear directly on the files again, you can switch to one of the Icon views.
