Having issue opening my C4D files on a shared server.

Hi there

I suddenly have an issue where I can't open any C4D (Cinema 4d) files from a shared server.

I can open the files fine on the server machine itself and all other file types open fine from the server (Photoshop files, InDesign files etc)

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? It literally happened overnight after many years of working seamlessly.

I am using Windows 11 on all machines

Fixed it!! During the Dropbox install, tick “Opt out of Dropbox for Windows Update,” sync again, and it’s back to normal.

I'm trying to understand how you're working. Do you mean that you have Dropbox installed on a computer being used as a server, and that you're accessing the Dropbox files from another computer through a folder shared from the server?

Are all the files on the server computer marked as available offline? After you open a file on the server itself, can you then open the same file on one of the client computers?

Yes we have Dropbox stored on a machine that we are using as our server. We then access files in that folder from other machines.

The files on the server computer are all marked as available offline.

We can open these files on the server machine itself but not through the remote machines.

Every other filetype works fine (Photoshop, InDesing etc) These other file types also work fine when placed in the same folder as the Cinema 4d files so it doesn't seem to be a folder issue.

The issue seems to be solely with Cinema 4d files

You should know that Dropbox doesn't support such a configuration. The Dropbox application running on your server may not receive notification of file changes or requests from the operating system when accessing the files remotely. Simply put, it's not designed to work that way.

Have you confirmed that?

You also mentioned that you're running Windows 11 and the issue started overnight. Dropbox is rolling out the Dropbox for Windows update which changes how the sync process works, and how files are stored/accessed. This could be causing your issue.

The 'available offline' files on the server show a solid green tick so should be all good there.

I think you're right that the issue has been casued by the Dropbox windows update

We've used this workflow for many years without issue, hopefully a fix is on the way

I'm having exactly the same issue. Same setup, same problem. It seems it happened right after a windows update or dropbox software update. I can open any file through the network, except for the .c4d files.

Hi @tom d.31, the information we received from our specialist team is that storing the Dropbox folder on a network drive isn't a configuration we officially support, so we’re unable to troubleshoot the issue you're experiencing.
To resolve this, they recommend moving the Dropbox folder to a local drive.

In the meantime, if there's anything else we can assist with, feel free to reply back here.

Hey @rick_g. To clarify, are you also using the exact same configuration as the OP user?

Yes, I do.. I’m sharing the drive that holds my Dropbox over the network. I can open .c4d files from outside the Dropbox folder, but not inside it. I have been using this setup for years and all of a sudden it's not working anymore. It only seems to be affecting .c4d files.
