Unable to move Dropbox folder to external drive on Mac

Good evening, I have tried many solutions suggested by this forum to get the result of having a copy of the files present on the cloud also on an external mac disk but without success (permissions, formatting the APFS drive encrypted and not, mac os extended).

The disk where the operating system resides is 250GB and is not sufficient to also contain the dropbox files.

currently my operating system is sequoia 15.3.2 si imac retina 5k 2020.

do you have any solutions?

Gentilissima Hannah,

è l'ultima volta che ti disturbo, solo per ringraziarti della pazienza che hai avuto in questi giorni per aiutarmi a risolvere il problema, che ho appena risolto.

semplicemente disinstallando e reinstallando totalmente l'app di dropbox. Di fatto la cartella in cloudstorage non si cancellava creando una nuova cartella nel drive esterno e ciò non rendeva il sistema funzionante.

Ecco cosa accade dopo aver eseguito le istruzioni del link da te gentilmente inviato: ho effettuato la trasformazione del volume in APFS crittografato, spostato la cartella di sincronizzazione su questo volume ma mi appare ancora il messaggio allegato (al momento non sei idoneo per Dropbox su Provider...)

Non hai realmente bisogno della versione File Provider dell'app Dropbox per usare effettivamente l'app.

Se non hai la versione File Provider, puoi usare i passaggi appropriati nell'articolo che ti ho fornito nella mia risposta precedente.

Dovresti comunque riuscire a spostare la tua cartella Dropbox sull'unità esterna con quei passaggi.

Hey Gerardo, thanks for the update!

You don't really need the File Provider version of the Dropbox app to actually use the app.

If you're not on the File Provider version, you can use the appropriate steps in the article I gave you in my previous reply.

You should still be able to move your Dropbox folder to the external drive with those steps.

Are you having any issues with that?

Let me explain, in the current condition I can move the folder to an external drive but not the content, only the file structure. Synchronisation only takes place for the files I open. I would like the contents of the Dropbox cloud to be on my external drive and be able to open the files offline.

Hey Gerardo, can you clarify what you mean by "Synchronisation only takes place for the files I open"?

Do you mean that after moving your Dropbox folder to the external drive all your files are set to "online-only"?

Si: significa che tutti i files sono sul cloud, quando apro uno di questi file, per consultare o modificare, automaticamente si crea una copia anche sul disco locale nella cartella di sincronizzazione dropbox. Di fatto la cartella dropbox su cloud è 2,5 GB mentre la cartella sincronizzata su disco locale è 180MB ed aumenta di volume solo aprendo i file. Ciò che io vorrei è avere una copia locale di tutto quanto presente sul cloud in maniera da poter utilizzare il tutto anche offline

Dovresti riuscirci cliccando con il tasto destro sulla cartella Dropbox e impostandola su "disponibile offline". Puoi provare e farmi sapere se funziona?

You should be able to do that, by right-clicking the Dropbox folder itself and switching it to "available offline". Can you try and let me know if it works?

Do you have any 3rd party apps accessing the Dropbox folder? If so, can you please disable them and let me know if that helps bring up the right-click options?

Per chiarire, dopo aver reinstallato l'app Dropbox sul tuo computer, non riesci ancora a vedere l'opzione "Rendi disponibile offline", corretto?

Grazie, come spiegavo nel precedente messaggio, ho risolto il mio problema, nel menu contestule (tasto destro) della cartella dropbox, su drive esterno, vedo tutti i comandi aggiuntivi, compreso "rendi disponibile offline"
