Boohoo! Just received this message when starting the macOS upgrade wizard.
I'd just started using this about 6 months ago. Sigh.
Hey @Darryl M.4, thanks for reaching out to us today.
We really appreciate your feedback about this and I will make sure that your comments are passed along to our team.
Indeed, on the latest Dropbox for macOS update, you will no longer be able to access Vault through the Dropbox desktop app.
However, you can still access your Vault on our website and the Dropbox mobile app.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Can’t access vault on Dropbox website either from iMac laptop. Can still access it through iPad.
Hey @Rjrkc - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.
If your iMac laptop was updated to this version of the Dropbox desktop app, it's normal that you can't access Vault.
There shouldn't be an issue with accessing it through the web though. Can you let us know if you're getting any particular errors when attempting to access your Vault through a web browser?
Hi, actually the sidebar does not work that way. It only shows what you have access to, so please follow these steps:
First on top left chose all files, then on the main screen scrol down to find vault. If you click on it it will ask you the password, and unless you lock it again from then on it will be accessible via the sidebar until you leave dropbox website. When you come back you need to unlock your vault from the main screen and only then you will have it on the sidebar.
Curiously, mine is always at the sidebar only greyed out until I unlock it with the steps from above.
Hi Hannah,
Is this issue with Vault on MacOS going to be resolved so we can access vault files from our macs? I'm not interested in using it if i have to go to the web vault, download, upload, etc to work on my most important private files.
Jim
Hi @jimjim6136, please see my earlier response in relation to your query.
Is there a notion to bring Vault back to Mac OS and why is it being dropped?
I'm still unable to access my vault files through the website nor iPhone app. This is a major disappointment!
https://www.dropbox.com/vault This should bring up your vault if you are signed into your dropbox account and then asking for your pin. Even double clicking vault in your finder normally goes straight to yours in the browser.
What the hell is Dropbox doing? This is a very important feature for users to put sensitive files on Cloud. Actually one of the alternative solutions is Boxcrypt but Dropbox indeed acquired them, and forced them to stop providing service anymore. So, there is basically no strong viable solution available in the market. Is this something Dropbox wants to discourage putting sensitive content on Cloud?
So, like everyone else, I've stumbled through being required to access Vault via browser (Grrr...) but how can I edit a simple text file in Vault? Back in good ol' days I could just vi/whatever that file. Now, I click on it in the browser and Dropbox displays it but I can't edit it.
Yes, I understand that I have to access Vault via browser now but how can I edit a text file in the Vault? There doesn't seem to be a way to do this simple action.
ok, jay/dropbox staff- what's the result of your exploration of options that address our concerns? this is so disappointing and, frankly, unacceptable. i've been waiting for a year now, to see if this problem would be addressed but now i'm planning on migrating my files to another service. thanks!
Hi @thognar, it wouldn't be possible to edit files directly in the Vault. You'll need to edit files first on your computer, then upload them into the Vault on the site.
@beelove, what concerns do you have in particular regarding the change to having Vault being based on the Dropbox site?
@Jay,
My guess is that the overall concern is that the update is one of the worst decisions Dropbox could have ever made!! Honestly, what benefit does it bring to work via a browser, where you can even edit a text file, other than that you now have millions of (very frustrated) people on your website? I am very pleased that I never made the update and I am just closing all your annoying popups to start using Vault. I just can't understand the silliness of this decision. Is there no concern from head-office that this will cause mass sub-cancellations?
Thanks for the feedback. As this is a change required by the new File Provider update, there isn't much else we can suggest.
We do appreciate your comments and take everything into consideration when looking to improve the service.
I set up a Vault after carefully reading about it on your website... where it is STILL saying I can access my Vault from my Mac Desktop. Now that I've done all this work, I find out that I actually CANNOT access my Vault on my Mac Desktop? Thanks for completely wasting my time. Why would you disallow this? If this promised feature returning? Is there ANY response as to why this happened?
You can't compare the web interface to the ease of manipulating files and folders on macOS. It's just not workable this way 😞
Just cancelled my Dropbox subscription. Moved all my data to iCloud. If Dropbox does not want to listen to MacOS users, so be it...
You'd think that after their stock plunged in Feb 2024 when they made this decision that they listen to at least their shareholders. But seems that they don't even care about them. Can you imagine how much they care about the users 😒
