New iMAC 24". Updated system, updated dropbox desktop (& beta API, v. 181.4.5678). Fast fiber internet lan connection. Unable to upload a file or afolder for backup in dropx (have ample space).
Thanks
Hi there @GG_drop, sorry to hear about this.
Can you please let us know your computer's exact OS version and where your Dropbox folder is located as per the sync tab in the app's preferences, if possible before the app crashes?
Do the crashes happen after you take a certain action or immediately after launching it?
Any additional information you can share is more than welcome!
Dropbox is located in "Locations".
Still have only old backups from my laptop and another iMAC, occupying less than 4% of my 2 TB.
Reinstalled all, and no limits on bandwidth.
New computer installed by 'migration assistant'.
Thanks,
Thanks for the additional information @GG_drop
Could you clarify when the crashes occur as well for us?
Upon uploading as can be seen in the screenshots (Chrome)
thank you!
OOps forgot another screenshot- please see here
Hi @GG_drop, just to sum it up: it seems you're using Chrome to upload content to your account online.
Now, judging from the last screenshot and the amount of files you're trying to upload at once, it makes sense that the website would crush.
You can either break the amount in smaller batches, or use the app, to upload content to your account, and allow for it to sync online. Can you give it a go, and let me know of the results?
Tried with Safari and it works to some extent, in chunks of data (which was impossible with Chrome). The reported task I got is quite funny:
only 20 years left to complete.
Nevertheless, it working very very slowly but working somehow no.
Problem left (for the time being...):
The "updating files" takes forever. Pleaae see:
thank you so much!
GG
One more question: you wrote:
"or use the app, to upload content to your account, and allow for it to sync online."
Do you mean the Desktop application in "Locations" and dragging folder there?
This sounds as a better approach but I'm not sure how to do it
Again, many thanks
Hi @GG_drop, yes, if you move files and folders into your Dropbox folder, the Dropbox desktop application would sync them to the site.
Do you have any proxy, VPN, firewall, security software, or even ISP/router settings that could be restricting traffic to the following Dropbox domains?
Thank you.
None. Just checked my computer speed (LAN) 770/280 Mbps.
On my computer's desktop dropbox folder (under Locations) I see that everything I backed-up so far is there (configured not 'online-only' but 'offline'). But on Dropbox .com several folders/files are missing. Could be that since I have deleted some backups and uploaded it is stuck? I noticed that the names of the files being synchronized was not changed during the last 3 hours!
Will move files as you suggested to the dropbox folder as you suggested but will give the endless synchronization another night.
Thank you,
What is the current status of the Dropbox desktop application, when you click on the icon and look in the bottom left?
Thank you, Jay.
After a night is states: "Everything is up to date".
I renamed my current iMAC, which I'm trying to backup, to "iMac24". And backed up chunks of folders via Drpobox.com in Safari (chrome crashes).
Situation now:
1.
The folders/files I tried to backup are shown in Locations/Dropbox/iMac24, but they are missing a lot of data. AS you can see in the attached screenshot (screenshot 1), just an example , the folders "Research" and "Letters and Miscll", are 569.6 MB and 950.1 MB, respectively, while they should be 17.57 GB and 10.04 GB, respectively. What should I do? continue to upload in chunks?
2.
Upon clicking dropbox in the menu, and clicking my avatar - The folder "iMac 24" is not shown at all (see screenshot 2). Instead there is a folder named "Mac" that I gave tried to delete several times but unsuccessfully (it was a dummy folder containing data that I have tried to backup). Upon clicking on "enable backup" (done it several times and redelted) it returns but I don't have any use of this old folder, and it is stuck there.
3.
In the web dropbox.com I see my "iMac 24" , but again the subfolders mentioned above are only with part of the data (verified by looking into them) as noted above (no size calculation in the web page` didn't know how to do it). Please see screenshot 3.
4.
I created a test file and saved it to </Users/gg/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox/iMAC24/Letters & Miscll>; and a copy of the same file, with the added word, ' copy', I saved into </Users/gg/Documents/Gershon's Folders/Letters & Miscll>. Results: I can see the former file in </Users/gg/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox/iMAC24/Letters & Miscll> and in dropbox.com on the web. But It was the 2nd file saved into </Users/gg/Documents/Gershon's Folders/Letters & Miscll> - is only there and not backed up. This means that I'm missing some of the basics in backing up files...
5. I'm frustrated. All I want is to backup my computer. have ample space (2 TB). willing to start from fresh; i.e., delete all backups, whatever.
The green syncing icon on the Dropbox folders means that they are up-to-date with all the info from the site. If you move more files into the Dropbox folder directly, they should automatically sync to the site, instead of having to upload to the site directly.
The computer backups don't use the name of the computer any longer, instead using 'Mac' or 'PC' depending on the device.
Only files stored in the Dropbox folder would sync to the site, so any files outside wont appear on the site.
Dear Jay,
Thank you very much for the helpful clarifications.
Since adding a small kn file directly to Locations/Dropbox didn't work I have re-installed all Dropbox software after deleting existing ones, restarted, and now I'm in the process of "updating 189,723 files" (as shown in dropbox icon in the menu).
Will take some time, and I'm taking the liberty to report to you again the results.
Thank you again,
Best,
Thanks for the update here, @GG_drop.
