I open my document in microsoft word online version of Dropbox and I would like to edit it using my desktop app. How can I do this? There is no function for opening it in word desktop version.
Hi @Sherly, thanks for reaching out to us here!
Through the Word Online app, there wouldn't be an option to open the file locally for editing.
To open your files in the local Microsoft apps for editing, you can use the Dropbox desktop app to sync your files locally to your computer. You can check out more info about the desktop app here.
It will create a local Dropbox folder on your computer which will sync any changes with your account online. This will allow you to open the files in local apps for editing and the changes you make with sync with your Dropbox account.
Let me know if this helps!
This problem has popped again - no idea how to show in finder / explorer
Megan,
I don't use the dropbox app on my desktop, I want all files to show up in Finder (I am Mac OS) when I get a file link from a team member it takes me to dropbox.com to see the file. From there I used to be able to click "show in finder" but that option is now gone . I only get the below image that that just shows "go to folder" rather than getting finder.
@Megan Yes, the app is running and synced on my machine - this isn't a shared link, this is another employee telling me where the file is. You can click copy dropbox link
This is the way to get people quickly to a file across multiple machines and syncs. We have 10+ years of data on dropbox so navigating to a file isn't helpful. I do not want to download a local copy of the file, I want to go to the file and edit it quickly but with this shared link, I can no longer navigate directly to it.
I am also experiencing this issue. The option to right click the select "show/reveal in finder" while on the web browser is no longer listed in the dropdown...
Hi anonymous & @kw8, let's try something else. Can you try using a different browser to see what you can find there? Also make sure that you don't have any settings or extensions that might be blocking this.Feel free to check this Help Center article. Also, does this happen for all of your files and folders, or just a particular one?
@Megan I can confirm on FireFox that it also does not work - I am on the latest version of Chrome with this issue. Also my entire team (windows and mac) of 28 people is seeing the same issue. The feature to "revel/show in finder" is gone
@Megan nothing on our side has randomly changed - we have checked that area and it is the same / autodetect - I think the feature has been removed - can you confirm? I just want to know if we need to start working on a new solution for DropBox before our annual renewal because the software is now unusable for our multiple teams and platforms with a basic "always been there feature" removed
@Megan this is still an issue - is there no resolution?
@Megan that is fine - i am looking for it to get resolved so we can continue our work flow
Hi-
This drives me crazy - sometimes, while accessing Dropbox Excel or Word files stored here- they are allowed to be opened & edited in the full desktop program instance of either. Then the next day, when going back to work on the same file - I only have the option of the web version of Excel or Word. Nothing has changed, from the way I access the files. I don't understand?! Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks
Hey @jcoop, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Can you double-check that the Dropbox desktop app is working on your computer?
If you hover over your Dropbox icon, what's the sync status and version of the app?
Also, if you navigate to the files directly from the Dropbox folder and not from the website, are you able to open and edit the files?
And do your changes sync online?
