How could I upgrade to Dropbox Paper 2020 from the older version?
Hello @neosmile.
Thank you for your interest in Paper 2020 .
Currently, the Paper 2020 release is available to new users only. Our team is currently in the works of a new feature in order to build the best Paper experience for all our users. Old and new.

Here is a help center article with all the information you need.

Cheers!
It's Q1 2023. Now the migration guide indicates the upgrade for legacy users is Q3 2023. Assuming the deadline is respected, it will have been 4 years since Paper 2020 was introduced for new users in 2019. Unfortunately, based on past experience, it's hard to believe that this deadline is meaningful.
For those of you still holding onto this completely absurd situation, may I recommend checking out all the new features of Google Docs that match most of what Dropbox Paper does.
There's now a pageless mode (see Page Setup), sidebar navigation, table of contents, Smart Chips, footnotes, pretty decent project management tables, comments & visual text edit suggestions, etc. Plus plenty of things Dropbox Paper doesn't have, like tons of high quality fonts, line and paragraph spacing flexibility, bookmarks, math equation support, not to mention it's far more widely accessible and familiar to people.
I agree - I'm now moving everything into Google docs.
They've migrated me, just now, to the new version and it's bloody awful. I don't want my note taking bundling into some rubbish file system. Whoever designed this is a muppet
Please help with these questions:
1. In my Dropbox folder, I can't create dropbox paper; I can only create word and Google Docs.
2. is it because I am using the old release, how to update to new release?
Hey @JasmineLam, if you don't have the option to create a Paper doc on dropbox.com, it means you're indeed on the old version of Dropbox Paper.
I've moved your post to this thread, so you can access some more relevant info about the new release of Dropbox Paper.
I hope this helps!
how about i deleted my Dropbox account and create it again? Is it going to be the new version? Did anyone tried?
I was looking to move some of my teams organisational aspects and time-lining over to Dropbox Paper. I used Paper in it is early days and it was OK but lacked some basic functionality which would have made a good tool; but, I had heard that Paper had been upgraded and was interested to see if it would work for me. It sounded like it would as it now could store directly to dropbox folders (like Google Docs does) plus other new features. After several hours of research and faffing about, along with speaking with the help desk I discover that these new features are only available to new users. I am sorry but WHAT?
I have business account and since the new Paper was released in 2020 have given dropbox THOUSANDS of dollars in fees but for some reason Dropbox doesn't see it as a priority to look after those who pay them money. I can't see how this would even get past consumer affairs. To make matter more irksome I started this plan in 2020 so when it was released was even a pretty new customer. Dropbox says it is working through issues which meant paper didn't integrate with existing files; but they have been doing that for three years. If the program was that far off finished in 2020 why release it at all? The only cherry in the subscription models that we, as purchasers, are now forced to be a part of is that we receive the latest releases and no longer have to but the program outright every few years. That Dropbox are not playing their part in the deal beggars belief.
My new idea?? Look after your customers Dropbox. They might stay. Very interested to hear what the development team has to say about this.
How can I get 2020 release?
I set 'Early releases' turn on but nothing happen in an hour...
Hey @lxk, thanks for posting today.
The new release of Dropbox Paper is still slowly being rolled out, so it's not yet available to everyone.
You can read more about it here.
Did you receive some kind of email saying that it's available for you?
Let me know.
Thanks for your reply.
I didn't receive any email about that.
Actually, I have another account and I already used 2020 release in several years.
Is there any tip for getting earlier than do nothing?
It's been 3 years since the 2020 release. And... our account still doesn't have the ability to merge the file structure of Dropbox storage with the Dropbox paper file structure. Very disappointing.
Hi marcio_at_zam,
I was in the same case. Dropbox can fix this for you but you need to enter a support request and insist. The thing is that there is a small risk involved (mainly of not being able to find existing Paper docs) and for this reason they still haven't rolled out the solution to all users. You just need to confirm that you're willing to accept this risk. For me it's working fine now, I can create Paper docs in Dropbox folders.
I asked in the chat service, and they told me that this feature is only for accounts opened after 2020. Also, according to them, the “old” accounts don't have this functionality, and we can only access papers through the website or the app.
Hi guys, I'm a long time dropbox paying subscriber, and I jumped on Paper way back when it originally launch. I didn't use it much then, but I have a use-case for it now, but it seems like my account is stuck on the old version of Paper, and not the new version of Paper 2020. According to the FAQ, Paper 2020 is only available to new users...like what? It's been 4 years (assuming the 2020 is the year the Paper 2020 launched) and you still haven't migrated legacy PAYING subscribers to the new version yet?!
Using the legacy Paper won't work for my use case, as I need to manage my Paper files and other files in the same dropbox folder. So basically until that feature rolls out to me, I can't use dropbox for this project. Seriously considering if using dropbox is even worth my time anymore.
By chance I opened the Dropbox app on my phone and it turns out sometime in the past month or so my account was migrated. I now have the ability to store and create Paper documents without needing to manage another app or sharing mechanism. So things are being converged, but it's not at a rate we all might like.
I actually gave it a try in the iOS Dropbox app... bombed out when creating the file. The web app doesn't even expose the option to create Paper files. Is the solution here to create a new account and migrate things over (or request an account merger)?
I received a notice on Dec 2 that my Paper document will be updated to the 2020 release within the next week, but it has not been updated yet. When will it be updated?
If past serves as a predictor of what to come, I think "next week" means something like "next year". Dropbox Paper 2020 was released in... 2020, and promises to upgrade legacy users were periodically made until now, late 2024. I received the same email as you did, and for a while I believed something would change. I should have known better.
+1
"In the next week, an update to Dropbox Paper will bring your Paper docs to your Dropbox folder. Your docs will be easier to organize, find and store alongside your other files in Dropbox."I received the above email on 15 of December 2024.Still nothing has changed. How hard is it to have a reply from someone at Dropbox and most important to have this thing done.Paper 2020 and we are few days away from 2025!!!
For those that have not yet been migrated to Paper 2020 but received the notice email about a (previously) impending upgrade, check your accounts. I received my notice on 2024.12.01 and as of today (2025.01.01), it appears to have been completed for my account.
I don't know the reality behind the jump from a one week expectation to this, but it seems like progress has been made!
The update was completed in my environment. Also, my friend who did not complain about Dropbox was updated as well. It's good to see that some progress has been made.
Not so much luck for me yet!
