photo files extensions changed from a .jpg to a two-digit numerical file extension

Looking for some help .... I copied and moved about 13,000 photos from the dropbox default Camera Upload folder to a folder I created within dropbox and named 2019.

When the photos transferred into the 2019 folder, all of my photo files changed from a jpg file (and .mov file too) to a two-digit numerical file extension. I can't open them unless I go in and manually change the photo from a .00 file to a .jpg file.

I have transferred photo files with in dropbox numerous times, but never had this happen before.

Has anyone has this issue or and suggestions to make them all jpg or .mov file extensions?

It sounds like when you're renaming the files, you're not including a file extension. If during the rename process you're removing or typing over the .JPG extension and then not re-adding it at the end, Dropbox is going to upload it without the extension.

Hi @John609, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Dropbox wouldn't automatically rename your file extensions to another extension during a move.

Did you move the files via the site itself, through the mobile app, or the Dropbox folder?

Were you using any third party apps at the time of the moving?

I was on my desktop computer in explorer, I highlighted the files I wanted to move from the Camera Upload folder to a folder within Dropbox I named 2019.

Once I highlighted the files - I clicked on one of the files and dragged it to the 2019 folder. Once I released the file over the 2019 folder it started moving the files into the folder. Once they were moved to the folder (which took several minutes) the had the new file extension. I have done it many times before without any issues.

It sounds like this was an OS-related issue, since you did the move via Explorer.

For some reason, Explorer removed the file extension and kept the last .00 of the time of the photo to be the file extension.

This happened to me too. Did you every find a way to revert back to original file type?

Hi this has happened to me as well. I send jpg photos from my iPhone to Dropbox and they are automatically converted to the .00 file extenstion and I can't open them. Any suggestions? Thanks!

When you say that you send .jpg photos from your iPhone to Dropbox, how exactly do you do that?

Do you select the content in your camera roll, and then share it to Dropbox? Do you upload them using your browser, or the app in your mobile? If this isn't the way you're using it, feel free to correct me, and let me know the process you follow.

Thanks for the quick reply Megan! And going through this exercise, I just figured out what is happening...however I don't know why, so maybe you can help. Here's my process is:

I take a picture of a reciept on my iPhone

I open the photo on my phone and click the "share" icon (bottom left box with an arrow pointing straight up)

I select the Dropbox icon for my Dropbox phone App

I rename the image so I can identify the reciept (this is where I just realized what is happening)

I select the proper Dropbox folder and click "upload"

When I used to rename (process for the past 3 years prior to 2-3 weeks ago), the saved image would go into Dropbox as a JPG. However, all of a sudden all those JPS's turned to .00 files.

I just did a test and I did NOT rename the image; I just saved it and it IS a JPG in Dropbox. I did it again and did rename the image and it saved as a .00 file. See the image below.

My questions are: do you know why this is happening and also is there anyway to retrieve the hundreds of reciepts I've uploaded and access them again (I do not have them anymore).
