I think I had this usefull feature before and i can't find it now.

How do I import a word document to paper ?

While the "Import doc" feature on Paper home 🏠 has been temporarily disabled, you can still insert any file into Dropbox Paper. Hi -

I would also like to be able to import a Word document into Dropbox Paper. I often create a document in Word and then decide I want colleagues to collaborate on it, so I would want to import it to Paper (as Google Docs allows).

Is this functionality available? If not, can you add that functionality?

I tried this. It adds the Word document to a Paper document, but it does not open the document in Paper for collaborative editing. I copied and pasted in a resume, and the formatting is all off. Didn't there used to be a feature to open files that were in Dropbox in Paper?

Hey @peytonstafford, thanks for checking in with us!

For starters, you should be able to access your Dropbox files in Paper through the ribbon you’re seeing at the bottom as you’re editing a Paper doc. You can also drag and drop any file in Dropbox, as long as it's under 50 MB. Was there any special formatting that didn’t make it across?

Hi Jane,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I do not see a ribbon at the bottom of my Paper documents, and when I view the Word file under discussion in Dropbox, the options to open it are MicroSoft Word or to show it in Finder. There is no longer the option to open it in Paper. Am I missing something?

Thanks for checking my pointers & keeping me in the loop here @peytonstafford!

We may be viewing something different, however I’d be interested in seeing what a blank new Paper doc looks on your end to better understand the differences. If that’s okay with you, could you include a screenshot (without personal info) in your next message?

Re-iterating from my last comment, instead of importing your files from Dropbox to Paper, you can drag & drop them inside a Paper doc. If you’ve already stored this file in your Dropbox account, you should get a brief note about the match.

[On a brief sidenote, this thread was initially created (almost) a year ago, so the feature has evolved since then.]

I’ll be awaiting this screenshot to further advise. Thanks again!

Let me trace our discussion back to the starting point, in order to ensure we’ve covered everything.

It does not open the document in Paper for collaborative editing

Once you Insert you .docx file within Paper, this will automatically be uploaded to Dropbox & once you click on the preview, you’ll be given the option to “View on Dropbox”. ➡️ Once you click there, you’ll see the Open button that will let you edit a live version of the file.

I copied and pasted in a resume, and the formatting is all off.

When you copy & paste the contents of a .docx file in a Paper doc however, some formatting may have to be adjusted as you're switching platforms. In order to help you expedite matters, can I have you check the Paper shortcuts on the bottom-right hand corner? You should see them next to the "?" button.

Not the previous poster, but I have the same question.

When I insert the file in the paper document and then select the "Open" button I have other options but not paper:

Also I do have a "keyboard shortcuts" icon next to the ? icon in the bottom right corner of the paper document.

I would love to use paper instead of word, but this is the one thing I'd want to be able to do - if paper could import and export a docx as easily as with google docs (maintain formatting, headings), I'd go with paper no question. Otherwise I'll stick with the current system.

Rephrasing from my previous message, you may have to fine-tune formatting along the way as you import your docs to Paper, however I understand that you'd like to automate that as much as possible.

While we’ve explored how to use all features currently available, it looks like editing existing docs in Paper is important to you, so I’d encourage you to post your thoughts on the Paper Ideas section. Other Community members could be aligned & upvote your post there to show their support.
