The box icon on system tray stays at gray and says "Starting...". But, when files are changed on another computer, they are being synced. Should I be concerned? Is there a fix?
Thanks.
Hi again to all, This should be resolved now. Please restart your Dropbox desktop or mobile app and try again.Let us know if you are still receiving an errors or you're experiencing anything out of the ordinary & we can look further into it.Thanks to everyone for your reports & happy Dropboxing ahead!
Since (I presume) updating to Dropbox 54.4.90 on Windows 10 version 1803 (both Pro / Home), Dropbox is constantly 'indexing'. However, it still seems to be syncing files.
Unlinking / relinking accounts and uninstalling / reinstalling the desktop app makes no difference. I'm assuming this is an issue with the app itself?
I also have the same issue, I have tried un-linking and re-installing to no avail, the same issue is happening with another PC I am currently testing
Somewhat bizarrely, even though I'd already unlinked and relinked both personal and work accounts from the desktop app, and also removed and reinstalled the desktop app, and it didn't work - having removed the work account first, followed by my personal one, then readding them in the reverse order, it is now working!
Thanks for your help, Jane!
Hmm - it's no longer showing 'indexing' on my laptop; rather it's showing as 'Starting'. And it's still showing as 'Indexing' on my work desktop.
When I click on the settings section of the Dropbox app, it gives a summary of the space used, etc., both on my Personal and Work Dropbox accounts. The problem on both of these accounts are associated with my Work account.
Yet, strangely, even though the app is reporting that it's 'starting' or 'indexing', it's still syncing immedately, as it did before the update.
Work Desktop is Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and laptop is Windows 10 Home 64 bit. Both OSes are version 1803 / OS build 17134.165.
Turning off antivirus made no difference.
Any other suggestions?
Me too (ver 54.4.90 on Windows 7)
Hi. I have a problem. My dropbox is syncing normally between my computer and my cloud (http://dropbox.com) but the problem is that the little dropbox logo in my taskbar is saying "indexing, syncing..." with blue arrows as if it's working or doing sync or accesing my account. I reinstalled it, and it downloaded all my files again normallt but the logo still says the same.
Task bar logo problem, in English: indexing, syncing...
And then you can see that the files are correctly synced.
It's happening to me as well! God, I thought it was me, but maybe it's a Dropbox problem. I even started my own thread. Which is literally the same problem. I even reinstalled the app.
I did uninstall and reinstall as well. No help.

Dropbox 54.4.90
Windows 10 Pro
This is what mine look like. Our problem is slightly different.
When you closse the app or kill the task and you open it again it changes. But I guess in the end it's the same problem. It's more like the logo stuck in displaying those messages instead of going to "ready" (or whatever it says when it finishes syncing). I hope they fix it, because even if the files are correctly synced (I tried creating a txt file in my computer and it appeared normally in my cloud) it's kind of annoying.
I was having the same problem. I reinstalled the desktop app and now the "indexing, syncing" has gone away, but it is stuck saying "Dropbox 54.4.90 starting..."
In other topic, they posted this possible solution:
But the user reported that it didn't work at all.
Same. Windows Explorer says files are synced, but the logo in the tray is stuck on starting, and I can't open any of my files
I'm having the same issue. In addition to the desktop app being stuck "starting" I also noticed that I'm getting a warning on my mobile app saying "Your Dropbox is full. Contact your admin for more space" There is no way that this is correct since I'm nowhere close to reaching my limit.
In my case I can normally open, edit or move files and it doesn't appear anything related to space... (I am 50% full). It's more like a problem with the task bar logo/icon.
We are having the same issues. I am not getting any response from anyone from dropbox. I pay monthly for this service and no response for over 4 hours is not okay. We are sitting ducks until this is resolved. I am able to use dropbox on my desktop, but not on any mobile devices. We pay for 1TB of data and have used 131GB. Please help.
hello there!
i have the dropbox 2tb plan with smartsync (smartsync being the main reason i wanted it). i wanted to download the mac dropbox app and have everything "online only" simply so i can see the files as they come in.
it seems to be functioning fine in finder. i see all the cloud icons on all the files in my dropbox.
in the top bar however, the dropbox icon has a white "1" in a red circle. when i click on it, it seems to be stuck on "dropbox is starting ..."
this is fresh install (v54.4.90). i have tried uninstalling per dropbox instructions and re-installing two or three times now.
in preferences, i have tried setting my proxies to auto or no proxy because i read it helped someone else with the same issue. didn't help me. it's set to no proxy right now. under sync menu, i have my files start as "online-only."
note: i have set my dropbox location to a secondary internal drive. might this be a problem?
lastly, i am only using 41% of my 2tb on dropbox.
thanks for your help!
I have two administration accounts on my WIndows 7 x64 system, just in case my primary does not work. The primary account does have the latest version fo dropbox installed. The backup account does NOT have dropbox installed.
The last couple of days, my PC was not booting past the selection of users into my primary account.
I accessed the secondary admin account, then switched to the primary to get past this new glitch. I have also noted that the dropbox icon remains grey and has the note "Dropbox is starting" when the pointer hovers over the icon.
I ended up uninstalling dropbox completely. The computer booted flawlessly. So I reinstalled dropbox. I am again having boot issues into the account that has dropbox installed.
Once I get past the boot issues, the icon is still greyed out and the same "Dropbox is starting" message shows when I hover the pointer over the dropbox icon.
The syncing appears to be continuing even though the message would suggest otherwise.
I have read other posts in the forum and have tried proxy settings in both the on and off positions. No difference in outcome.
Since dropbox is effectively our company's WAN, this new behavior is rather troubling. Any suggestions for fixing this problem, or do we need to switch to another cloud based file sharing system?
Thanks for the nudge @rhelvey, I’ve made sure to reply to you on your open ticket!
I'm having exactly the same problem, started today on 3 separate machines (all macs).
Tried with the latest beta and stable v54.4.90, same on all machines. Red 1 in the icon, leave it all day, still says it's starting. There does appear to be some activity, but it's very slow and no real idea what's going on.
I've also tried starting from scratch and wiping the folder settings etc, login and link again, same deal.
I'm on the professional plan too, although as far as I know still on 1TB, but alarmingly if I look in my Dropbox account is says:
Your account is full Using 429.15 GB of 0 bytes
So our space has vanished according to dropbox, so I suspect there is a broader issue here that's not specific to the client. I'll be getting in touch with dropbox support.
