Dropbox Update installation failed with error 0x800b010e

I'm receiving the following error when attempting to install dropbox: "Dropbox Update installation failed with error 0x800b010e".

I'm running Windows 10. I have also attempted the offline installer with no success. The only antivirus and firewall running are Windows Defender.
I have restarted the computer a few times, no luck.

Any suggestions are welcomed. Regards.

The error is a MS one and sadley not specific. Lets try this an see where we get:

1) Quit Dropbox:

2) Uninstall Dropbox

3) Restart

4) After this, please proceed to delete remaining registry entries:

a) Click the Start button. Type REGEDIT in the search box and press Enter.
b) In the Registry Editor, navigate into the following locations until you find the keys for "Dropbox" and "DropboxUpdate", they will be in either or both of the following two locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
c) In both or either of these folders, please delete only the "Dropbox" and "DropboxUpdate" folders by right-clicking on the individual folders and selecting "Delete".

5) Then, please delete the Dropbox remaining folders:

a) Open a Windows File Explorer (not Internet Explorer).
b) Type %LOCALAPPDATA% into the address bar (include the % percent signs) and press enter.
c) Delete the folder "Dropbox" from the resulting window.
d) Please repeat these steps with the following folders as well (it's OK if you don't find a Dropbox folder in any of those locations):
%APPDATA%
%PROGRAMFILES%
%PROGRAMFILES(x86)%
e) Then restart your system.

Please note that deleting any of these folders will not delete the files in your Dropbox folder.

6) Download the newest version of Dropbox from the following website:

https://www.dropbox.com/downloading

7) Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the installation file and double click on it.

8) During the initial setup and sign in process apply any Selective Sync settings you may have had prior to the reinstall and select the Dropbox folder location (if not in the default location).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because this process removes the previous settings and configuration, if you wish to avoid re-downloading your Dropbox content you will need to manually choose the location for Dropbox to sync to, otherwise you will create a new Dropbox folder and start to download your content again.

To select your already established folder on your drive, after signing in and choosing which folders to sync, and before you click on "Open my Dropbox folder", you should see an "Advanced Settings" link, click on this.

Then you can choose the parent folder of the already established Dropbox folder, for example, if you have your Dropbox folder in the path "D:\OtherDrive\Folder\Dropbox (Team)" you'll want to select the folder "D:\OtherDrive\Folder".

At the end of this process, after clicking "Open my Dropbox folder", it might take some time to re-index the files and sync any pending changes.

Please note that any changes made to the files in the Dropbox folder, the web interface or other linked devices while the folder was "off-line", will generate conflicted copies:

Finally, this process only works when linking to the exact same account that was previously linked to this computer. If you'd like to merge accounts, please refer to the following Help Center article:

Have you tried the offline installer after you disabled Windows Defender (antivirus/firewall)?

Okay, thank you for clarifying about Windows Defender.

I searched Google for the error message, I recommend that you do some non-Dropbox related research while you wait to hear back from the Support Team (view screenshot below).

It's possible that the "Error 0x800b010e" message is more likely related to your operating system and has nothing to do with Dropbox (other than that's what you're currently trying to install).

If you haven't done so already... post your question in the Microsoft Community regarding the error code. Perhaps someone there can help you to rectify the problem.

The Dropbox team told me it is not their problem and that I should contact Microsoft for help.

I have tried to install Dropbox on 5 different computers (all Windows 10). They all have the same issue. One of them is brand new (1 week old) with Windows 10 operating system.

I haven't finished all the steps on the link above, but I will post an update once I find something that works.

It does seem to be a general Windows error message, which could indicate potential corruption in the file system, among other things, but they would have more specific details on this error.

I received a suggestion from the Microsoft forum, but it didn't work.
It was the following:

Open Windows Defender Security Center
Open App & browser control
Set the Off option for Check apps and files.

-It didn't work.

I have tried the Microsoft help: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/fix-windows-update-errors

I followed all the steps and nothing worked.

I'll try again in a few days and I'll post the results.

I chatted with Microsoft Technical support regarding the above error message.

I was told to "get lost" and that I should contact Dropbox technical support. Dropbox technicall support referred me to Microsoft, and Microsoft referred me back to Dropbox. This is going nowhere.

I will keep trying to get someone to help.

I don't think it's a Microsoft Problem. In the German Community other Users have the same problem. I can't believe that all of these Users have problems with Windows Update.

I have a Fixit-Tool for Problems with Microsoft Windows-Update. Find nothing. I removed Dropbox completly from my Notebook and installed it again. For the moment everything is ok. I installed Dropbox with an older Version. After Installation Dropbox runs the Update to the newest Version.

Will see if it works for the next Update.

my windows 10 was free upgrade from windows 7. i have followed all steps posted (from regedit to %programfiles(x86)%), but no luck. run the offline install version with adminstrator but still not luck. please help

Just checking, when you say ‘run the offline install version with administrator’, are you running the program normally?

Contrary to what it seems, if you chose to run the installer using elevated permissions, namely, right-clicking it and choosing to run as administrator, then this isn’t going to work as expected.

Let me know if running the installer normally after an advanced reinstall still doesn’t work.

I tried both methods; normal and adminstrator (per posted steps). Both methods gave me the same error message (0x800b010e)

checking, i'm on windows 10.

i don't see Dropbox app in "App & feature". I presume i never had Dropbox installled.

If on Windows 8 or 10, search and click Control Panel in the start menu.
Click Uninstall a Program (Vista, 7, 8, 10).
Select Dropbox from the list of programs and click Uninstall

If you’ve never had the Dropbox app installed, then the installation error should be OS-related, since it’s not even able to open the installer.

There isn’t much I can suggest on my end.

If you want to rule out an issue with Dropbox, you could try creating a new user profile on your computer, not a Dropbox account, but a login to actually access your computer.

On the new user account, try installing the Dropbox desktop application from the site.

If it installs correctly, then you can be sure there’s an issue with Windows, or namely, the user profile you use when accessing Windows. This might help Microsoft troubleshoot this matter further on their end.

i created a new account in Windows 10 and logged in the new account. I downloaded the version from the link from your last email. The installation process failed again with the same error. It has proved it is not an OS issue, right?

I have three laptops. All PCs are connected to a switch before going to a modem. I have the same installation error message for only two PCs. One was able to complete the installation process. All three PCS are on Windows 10 with upgrading from Windows 7 or XP. Do you think if it is network related issue? Please advise.

Interesting… Since this isn’t a Dropbox error, I can only assume that something is affecting the installer itself. It might not be an OS issue, but could now be network related.

As the installation worked on one machine, but not two others and both with the same message, my impression now is that the Dropbox desktop application isn’t getting downloaded in full, or something is interacting with the installer during the download.

Could you try downloading the installer on the computer that works, and then use a USB stick to transfer it to the other computers and try to install it there?

If this fails, download the installer from another network completely and do the same thing with the USB stick.

Another point of consideration, though you don’t need to do this yet, is that the switch, or the network cable to the switch for those computers is faulty in some way, or restricting/corrupting the download.

The error might be a Windows error code, but the solution you propose is fixing a DropBox problem.

Well, that’s not what I was saying to be honest.

If we rule out Windows and Dropbox, then it’s something affecting your internet connection and thus the downloaded installer, which is why I suggested downloading it from elsewhere.

If that installer works on one machine, but not another, then there’s a problem with that Windows device and not Dropbox.

Since we’ve not received any reports about this matter, aside from the users in this thread, it appears to be an isolated issue specific to those users, so specific in fact that it’s difficult to pinpoint what could be causing this.

As well the steps I suggested, perhaps keeping the Windows machine fully updated using Windows Update would help to allow it to install any necessary security patches etc which could help stop this issue.

I was able to resolve the issue by removing the aforementioned Dropbox keys in the registry and then reinstalling. I don't see how you can describe that problem as a "Windows Device problem" since it is Dropbox and the Dropbox installer that are responsible for reading and writing those keys.

For troubleshooting, I'd suggest having the next poor soul who runs into the problem exporting the keys from the registry and passing them along as a test case.

I copied the installation file from an PC with working dropbox installer. I also download Dropbox installer offline version. I logged in to a new account on Windows 10 and tired both versions. Both versions failed on me with the same error message.

From suggestion of Joe23, is it worth a try to import the registry keys? how do I export the keys from the registry?

Hi I have done all you said but it doesn't work yet why didn't you make a registry file for doing these automaticaly Microsoft says the error code belongs to the windows update 7x80070002 but it seems you have to connect with microsoft if you know or think it's not from Dropbox anyhow I still can't use it, please find a way for me to use it again with best wishes ShaPour [personal information removed by moderation]

2019_05-17: I, too, could not get Dropbox Offline Installer 72.4.136 to install on my new laptop running Win 10 Pro 64-bit. Installation would start and then immediately report an error 0x800b010e. I spent hours reading threads, messing with RegEdit, rebooting, disabiling this or that, booting in safe mode, etc., etc, etc. Trying every "solution" with no luck.

THEN, I tried installing it on a profile that logs into Microsoft. BAM! It loaded!

Afterwhich, it even installed on a profile that does not log into MS where it would not install before.

I have not ever been able to install dropbox. I have disable firewall and antivirus with no change. I have checked registry to be sure there were no prior installation, and there are no files or folders for dropbox. No matter what I try, I get the same error message. running latest windows 10 version with all updates.
