I get a 1073741795 error and the Dropbox app can't be updated to build 260.4.XXXX.

Hello everyone,

I am having problem in updating my Dropbox Desktop version from

258.4.3749 to 260.X.XXXX: the installation of the new build can't be completed.

After few seconds appears the error code 1073741795.

My laptop is very old: I am running W11 23H2 obtained through an installation with Rufus and my CPU is an Intel Dual Core P9700.

This CPU doesn't support the instruction SSE 4.2.

Could it be that the new Dropbox builds have implemented these kind of instructions , causing a compatibility issue?

Hey Luca! Seeing that it’s been a day since you posted this, I’d like to check if the issue still persists.

As for the updating of the Dropbox app, this is something that should occur automatically no matter the installer that you used.

Hey there @Luca72!

As a first step, please double check that your device meets all the necessary requirements to run Dropbox.

Also, do you happen to have any antivirus, firewall, security program, proxy or VPN blocking the Dropbox desktop client? If so, please either add Dropbox to its whitelist, remove Dropbox from its blacklist, or temporarily disable them. You can read more about that here.

Is the Dropbox desktop application installed with admin permissions? If this persists after rebooting your internet router and/or on another network, you can try an advanced reinstall too.

I read the minimum requirements for running Dropbox Desktop on Windows:

it is only mentioned that the pc has to be updated to W10 or W11.

My Laptop is running W11, so it is in line with the spec.

No info about CPU restrictions.

I disabled for a while my antivirus in order to avoid having interference during the installation.

No VPN enabled.

I have the admin priviledge.

Attempted the advanced installation but I am blocked by the same error

code 1073741795

Could you install the Dropbox app while in safe mode, or even try creating a brand new OS profile on your computer and try to install and run the desktop app there? Do you notice the same behavior there by any chance?

already tried without success but no error message displayed. Simply the installer doesn't start.

I have also tried to use the Enterprise Installer: no error displayed, Dropbox version 260.4.2926 is listed in the programm list, an icon is created on the desktop but Dropbox itself doesn't work. No Dropbox folder is created.

The worst thing is that I wasn't able to unistall this Dropbox version.

I solved by using a third party app for forcing the removal of it.

I want to inform everyone who attempted to help me that my dropbox desktop app updated itself spontaneously jumping from the build 258.4.3749 to the latest one 262.4.3183.

All the previous builds named 26X.X.XXXX created the error code 1073741795.

I do not know the reason why of this, but at the moment the issue seems to be spontaneously solved.

Maybe something has been implemented in this new build.

A Dropbox guy called Maddison, who contacted me via email (2nd support level of Dropbox), has the DMP log file taken from my laptop to analyse.
