Why on earth is this happening ?!? its resyncing everything again nothing has been changed why ?
I don't recall any changes to the OS etc. It didn't say re-indexing, it said updating and the number of files kept increasing. After one or two days it was still going like crazy.
I found online somewhere that I should delete filecache.dbx. I did that, restarted dropbox. Now it did re-index all files, but this only took a couple of hours. I've not had a problem since.
I think it would be nice if Dropbox would pay attention to this sort of thing in a more timely fashion for paying customers.
I have the same problem. One minute everything was synced and green and then suddenly everything was resyncing. Why is this happening?
It may have been your client updated on the computer. Often when this occurs a reindex happens. What that is the client compares all the files to those on the server, making sure they are indeed on the client. It appears as a full upload is occurring, but its just sending small bits of comparison data and should finish relatively soon. Relative, depending on your internet speeds and how long you use the client etc.
My dropbox is re-syncing. Why? I think I see from a previous post that this is different from a re-upload. But why does this happen?
I have re-started my laptop after it has not been used for about two months.
Dropbox has downloaded the file list and is now downloading more than 80,000 files, my entire Dropbox folder. It's as though Dropbox does not recognise the files that are already on the laptop and downloads the entire folder, rather than just those files that have been created or amended since the last connection.
This is not the first time it has happened. It ties up the laptop for 15 - 20 hours doing it and I don't have time to wait.
Very frustrating and makes me think of abandoning Dropbox which, in every other respect, is an excellent service.
Any help would be appreciated.
My entire Dropbox is re syncing !!! I added one file on my home PC and and when I go to work and login it is downloading all my files (from Dropbox) again!! I have a presentation to do in 10 minutes and I cant access it!!!! I know that its probably just verifying that the files exist BUT that's going to take about 20-30 minutes at least.
I have had this same problem for months now and have gotten no help from Dropbox support. Has anyone figured this out??????
As long as the pc is on and Dropbox is running it seems fine, but if it reboots, goes in to sleep mode, etc. Dropbox thinks it needs to resync ~20,000 files!!!
Maddening!
I have just had exactly the same problem!! I was travelling for the week and my desktop off and was using my iPad to update files on dropbox...when I switch my desk top back on, it thinks it needs to resync everything and I've hardly changed anything!!! Really frustrating!
I have tried clearing the cache, etc. nothing seems to work!
Same here. It affects only one of three Dropbox Pro accounts in our office, but with all six PCs affected, re-syncing over 120,000 files on each machine, creating lots of conflicted copies where files have been edited during this giant re-sync. We are now at 24 hours and counting, as I left all our PCs running overnight in the hope it would finish. This is surely a bug and not normal Dropbox functionality.
Same issue here this morning (OSX).
Restarted my macbook and got the dropbox login prompt as if this was the first time it has run (including re-entering 2 factor authentication code).
It has been resyncing files for hours now when nothing had changed on the computer. Not sure if this is because there was a bad client update or some other issue, but a very bad sign for my confidence level in Dropbox.
Very very very very annoying.
This is what dropbox support is telling me:
"As I mentioned, the application indexes your files when you restart your computer, relink your computer, or when your computer comes back from Sleep Mode.
In this case your sync status will say that it is syncing your files. This is normal behavior."
Either I'm still stuck in Level 1 support land where they don't have a clue or I'm switching away from Dropbox.
@Lance S... We've all seen the short download/index message when dropbox or a computer restarts. This is nothing like that behavior. Support is misleading you I suspect. Looks to me like they might have pushed out a buggy update or something.
Its acting link there was a fresh client install on the computer and is doing a full resync. The basic startup doesn't consume 30Mb of bandwidth for 4+ hours. Since I restarted my computer dropbox has received 33GB of data with no signs of finishing.
Would really like some transparency from Dropbox on what the heck is going on here.
You're only course of action is to open a ticket with Support and explain the issue to them.

Replies take approximately 1 - 3 business days with Pro users getting priority (longer for Basic users).
@Rich R. I originally opened my ticket on 7/14/15 for this issue. Granted, I haven't had time to keep up the back and forth with all of the emails, but I haven't found support to be very useful. Hence my turning to the forum!
@ Rich R. Have opened a ticket but they say it is 24 to 48 hours to respond (on a Pro account).
... meanwhile drobox has downloaded 41GB on this PC alone since i got to work. Brutal.
If this happens on my other PCs I have linked to this account, it will be a mess.
I have the same problem (Dropbox making the complete resync again)... And reading your discussions, I understand there is no solution for this but wait the resync is completed... Am I wrong?
Alejandro,
I did have success in uninstalling dropbox completely, rebooting and reinstalling it on my laptop. So far it appears to correct the problem. I am hopeful that it might work on my other computers.
Good luck to you!
Thanks a lot Lance! I`ll try with that.
I have a pro account and since Ive started paying for that my mac keeps re-syncing??
Im using dropbox to store all my work (design and audio - theres a lot of it) but I cant access more recent files on other machines as my dropbox is repeatedly resyncing and pre-occupied with resyncing old files, files that havent been touched for months are saying they have just been updated, its hogging my bandwidth and making the whole point of my dropbox pointless.
This has only happened since I started paying for pro!! has anybody got any suggestions?
As you can see - mine is doing exactly the same thing, it made me look incredibly unprofessional to a client whom I was trying to deliver a folder to as it wouldn't sync, so I had to upload the files using another sharing app. WTF??
Hey guys. It's the original poster here, don't worry about that it just checks the files and doesn't reupload. Just give it a few minutes and it sorts itself out.
No its not, mine does it all for hours then finally gets around to uploading new work. Not done it for a while with me though.
Thought it was just me but my mac book air was running hot and realised it was trying to sync 117,000 files even though I update one or two. My desktop is doing the same and taking up all the bandwidth so slowing the PC down to unusable. The file k often work on has not updated and so I have two versions. I only spotted it because the numbers were wrong /different. This is very very poor as this is exactly what I was trying to avoid.
I am having serious doubts over drop box and may well cancel my subscriptions.
This is frankly RUBBISH
And in reply to the user who said it will take a few minutes!! Mine has been running for hours and hours with no signs of finishing.
Pure RUBBISH
Same issue here. Does dropbox resync all my thousands of files on my PAID account every time they publish an update on the app? That is absurd. I guess I better get used to their unimpressive web based platform.
Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. My paid dropbox is syncing 20+K files out of the blue (dropbox update?) and now cannot deliver an important update to an app on a server until the sync finishes. There must be a better way to accomplish dropbox updates!
Same problem. Suddenly ALL files began to re-sync. We have over 100,000 files and it DOES NOT quickly check the files and finish, it will take days at this rate (I'm on day 2). Absolutely unacceptable.
Same problem on OS X - it had disconnected my business dropbox and offered to connect it. Then it started downloading all files again - very very very annoying.
I now join the ranks of this community. I have been a dropbox pro customer for years and I have hundreds and thousands of files in their system.
Today it prompted me to login again and then began an index process which lasted most of the morning. That done its now Synching well over half a million files again!!!!!!!!
Dropbox. From the thread above it does not look like you have managed to resolve this issue. Are there any updates?
Oh - macOS BTW El Capitan
I am leaving cloud services for handling massive media. They are too slow up and downloading. Managing photos has been a major issue, with Dropbox losing tens of thousands of photos for me.
