If I open and view an online-only file, it becomes available offline

I have a shared dropbox folder that I use from Windows 10. There is a file that I want to be online-only.

 

But if I make the file online-only, and then open it for viewing and close it again (so no modifications). It is a normal Dropbox file again.

 

Why does it not stay online-only?

When you open an online-only file to view it, it's expected for the file to become available offline.

 

An online-only file is a mere placeholder file, so it needs to be synced, to be opened.
