In short, we had a customer provide us with a link to download a large dataset. I cannot say for certain the total aggregate size because the web UI does not show size of folders that have sub-folders and the nesting for some of the folders is deep (so I’d have to crawled thru dozens of them to add the sizes up manually). Lets assume its several hundred GB. When I attempt to use the web UI to perform the download, it errs "The folder is too large to download". This error also occurs when I try to download each the 7 root folders (each of which contain a nesting of sub-folders) one at a time. Thereafter I registered for a free account and installed the desktop client because I read that was a workaround. But, I have not found it to be helpful.
I see there is an option on the web UI for me to "copy to dropbox" in lieu of trying to download the content via a browser, but it also error citing my storage capacity being too small for the requested operation (I currently have the free plan since I have no need for DropBox apart from this current task). So, unless I am totally missing something here, it appears that I have to license myself for as much or more storage than the total volume of data the client sent me simply to allow the Desktop client to sync the content to my machine.
In short, it seems if a paying dropbox member send someone a link to download a large volume of data, the intended recipient is effectively forced to join and license dropbox to perform the download – seems very heavy handed. Am I missing something here? Am I forced to become a licensed and paying customer to be the recipient of data?
