linux command "dropbox status" attempts to start dropbox when it's already running

Dropbox is installed and syncing. Panel icon is active.

I want command line access to the status. According to this page https://help.dropbox.com/installs/linux-commands I should be able to issue `dropbox status` however when I do this I see dropbox trying to start (loading extensions) and no message.

I guess I've missed a step?

I have found a link to dropbox.py: https://www.dropbox.com/download?dl=packages/dropbox.py

This behaves like the `dropbox` command in the documentation.

I could symlink it to 'dropbox' but to avoid conflicts I call it by its full name with extension.

eg. `dropbox.py status` does what I'm looking for.

Are you running the command from within the Dropbox folderpath itself?

It is the same result whereever I run the command. In the Dropbox folder or in some other folder.

I recently ran into the same problem, where with every command dropbox wants to start. The solution below does not work for me. Also, it does not look like a proper solution. How does this all of a sudden happen? It used to be fine.

I put dropbox.py in `/usr/local/bin` which is a standard directory on the path of my Linux machine.

I can run the command from any command window.
