I have 1.8 GB free space in my dropbox and I want to continue with the basic plan. However, I am unable to upload any pdf or MS Office file, however small it may be.

In regards to the problem you face when you try to upload content into your Dropbox account, even though you have space: can you clarify the platform you're using on your end?
Do you use our website, desktop or mobile app? Also, do you get any specific errors? Feel free to share as much info as possible with me, so I can identify the root cause.
What about your account tab online? Let me know what it reports there.
