On Mac menubar Icon is gray and has an X, but everything is syncing fine. . .

On Mac menubar Icon is gray and has an X, but everything is syncing fine. . . I'm confused because this seems to be an error indicator, but everything still works fine. All the files and folders still have green check marks, and every time I update a file it syncs. Please help me discover why the icon has this. See attachments. Thank you!

I solved my issue: I have a (seemingly unlimited) business and a free personal DropBox account. In my personal account, I accepted a share from another user. Unbeknownst to me, DropBox counts files shared by someone else to my storage limit. When it does that it grays out the icon and puts an x on it. No message, no information, no nothing. after I removed shares and other large files, the storage moved below my quota and the icon returned to normal.

Shame on DropBox for

changing the icon on the app when only my personal account was over the space limits;
not providing a useful error message on why the icon changed;
counting files on someone else's storage limits on my storage limits as well;
not providing any help in solving the issue, even after contacting them via chat.

If you hover over the Dropbox icon, what message pops up?

When you click the icon, then the avatar on the top right, could you choose 'View sync issues' and let me know if anything appears there?

Same problem here. Booted up today and menu bar icon is greyed out with an X in it, although syncing works fine.

Hover mouse over it and it says "Dropbox 136.4.4345 Up to date"

Viewing Sync Issues shows "No errors"

Same issue, except it says 159.4.5870 Up to date. No Sync issues.

Just upgraded to macOS 13 Ventura, but was an issue before with Monterey.

Yes. It says everything is synced but I'm not sure.

Is it possible that you have some kind of security program, like an antivirus, a firewall, VPN, etc., that might be affecting the Dropbox application?

If so, can you temporarily disable them, to see if that helps?

I have the same problem on Ventura. Dropbox 160.4.4703. It happens whether the VPN is enabled or disabled.

Can you try to sign out of your desktop app, and then back in? Does that solve the issue for you?
