Anyone know where to find the gear icon on Dropbox?
I have Windows 10 and finally, finally found the gear icon and preferences. I agree that finding this should have been easier -- it should appear when one clicks the DropBox icon on one's desktop. But it doesn't. I created a very quick and dirty set of 4 screenshots that shows, in a very simple way (which is how I can understand these things) how I got to it. It starts with (1) the "show hidden icons" button that looks like an up arrow, on the lower right-hand corner of my screen (the area known as the "systems tray" - then (2) I clicked the DropBox icon (has a little check-mark on it) - then (3), a little box opens (labeled, "up to date" and lists "recently changed") and, lo and behold, the blasted gear icon appears in the upper right corner of it, so (4) I clicked that and got a dropdown menu that included "preferences." My very amateur set of screenshots is here:
It's part of the Dropbox client you install on your computer. Click the Dropbox icon in the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) and the gear will be in the upper-right corner of the window that opens.
Ok, sorry I feel daft but what is systems tray. I have tried getting dropbox from browser and from 'pictures' I still don't see any gear icon. Much appreciate your patience with me.
The system tray is where your clock is on your computer.
It is usually bottom right on a Windows machine and top right on Mac's.
Ignore the website - its nothing to do with that
The gear icon WAS on my system tray -- now, no more. How can I get it back?
Is Dropbox actually running then?
If not restart it.
Hi,
I saw the comment as to where is the gear for MAC, the problem is that I can't find the gear to look for preferences. Where is it? The only gear I see has nothing of Preferences in it.
It's on the top right corner of what? the finder? the computer?
thanks!!
Its in the Dropbox menu.
Click on the Dropbox icon then the gear icon.
It's just that I can't find the gear. The only little gear I see has nothing with preferences in it.
Is it in finder? is it in the computer itself?
Its on the computer itself. On the Dropbox application.
Click on the Dropbox icon on the status bar (i.e. near the clock, usually top right). It is there.
I finally found this. Hopefully will help you to Claudia. It looks like on a Mac there are two dropbox icons (one in the Finder - this is the one I have been repeatedly trying but the drop down menu doesn't show the gear/cog icon; the other one - the one you need - is on the bar running across the very top of your screen. The dropbox icon sits there next to any other startup app icons. Click on this one, and you will find a menu with the gear icon).
Hi
I have just installed Windows 10 on a Microsoft Surface. I want to do selective sync and can't find the gear icon in my Dropbox anymore. If I click on the dropbox icon it just says which are the recently changed files and "Up to Date" but no gear icon and henc no selective sync option...help !
This really is appalling. Dropbox and all these technology companies are owned by billionaires and employ top people. I simply cannot find the "gear icon". Why can the Dropbox info not make this idiot proof? It simply says click the "geat icon". I have Windows 10 and have clicked on every single thing that can be clicked on, accessing every single route into dropbox (from desktop to task bar to search menu etc).
I am reasonably computer literate compared to my parents or many other people, yet I cannot provide this because dropbox have made it so hard. Unforgivable when top companies do this.
It really isn't that difficult to find: system tray > Dropbox client icon > gear icon

Found the gear icon now. thanks
I know the gear icon in on the Dropbox pop up on the to right BUT when I click on the Dropbox icon in the system tray I only see about 50% of what I should. I don't see the gear (it is off screen). I don;t see the footer commands (Dropbox folder; Dropbox.com). I only see the Up To Date icon and truncated names of recent changed files
I have found the gear is hidden when I use a large display screen with my surface pro 3. If I boot directly to the monitor all works. If I start the surface pro then place in a dock, the video driver behaves differently and hides things.
If the gear icon is missing from the window that pops up from the tray (windows 10 problem?), try scrolling through the window by holding the left mouse button while moving the cursor over the edge of the window to scroll in that direction.
Found this out purely by coincidence. Hope this helps.
Lukas N., you da man.
windows 10, i can't find the gear icon.
It can be found as described above: system tray > Dropbox client icon > gear icon
To answer this question for some you - my computer like many of yours DOES NOT have the gear icon when doing as stated many times by Robert S. Instead, you have to Right Click on the Drop Box icon in your System Tray - to the left of the date and time at the bottom right corner of your screen. Only after right clicking with my mouse does the pop up come up that has the Gear.
Clicking the 'up arrow' as shown above DOES NOT bring up the Drop Box icon on my computer either, as shown in the May 22, 2016 post either.
.
Thanks for clarification Kathleen.
Dropbox should not need the extra steps to do that, but, its possible you've tweak something on your machine.
This is clearly self-contradictory.
The gear icon is exactly where it's supposed to be, i.e., system tray > Dropbox client icon > gear icon, so how do you arrive at the conclusion it isn't there?
(BTW, left-click or right-click, both bring up the exact same dialog box.)
It doesn't and none are evident here.
If I right click I just get "dropbox" and "unpin from taskbar". If I select "dropbox" I get open, unpin from taskbar, run as administrator, properties. If I left click, I get my list of files. I'm with Ben L. Fire the execs at Dropbox and put the money into a simple Windows 10 fix. I can't do a thing because my hard drive is full of my Droopbox files. I thought Dropbox was the CLOUD so I didn't realize it was saving to my hard drive too. Terrible.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox on my Windows 10 laptop. Now I get a white icon in the system tray and still right or left click, no gear icon. Immensely frustrating.
I have Windows 10 and no gear icon. Anywhere. My C Drive is full and my files will not sync. How can I change my settings if I cannot access the gear icon?
Follow the screen shots already given Brenda.
it should appear when one clicks the DropBox icon on one's desktop.
That icon is just a shortcut to your Dropbox folder. It's not the actual application (though it will launch the application if it's not already running, but ultimately it only opens the folder and has no other interaction with the program, just like all the other shortcuts on your computer).
Thanks for posting the screenshots. I've taken a screenshot and attached it to your post, instead of linking to an external site.
I recently changed to a Microsoft Surface Book running Windows 10 and the gear icon no longer appears for me when clicking on the DropBox icon in the system tray. So I can no longer access selective sync. It worked fine on my prior laptop and works on all my other computers that I am syncing to. I emailed support and they recommended I reinstall. I did so and during the install it allowed me to configure selective sync which allowed me to change the setting I wanted, but did not restore access to the gear icon. After done I still do not have access to the settings/menu. Left click and right click do nothing. Double left click brings up my drop box folder. Mouseover the icon brings up "DropBox 8.4.21 Up to Date". I know what should happen because I can configure on my other computers. It just doesn't work on this computer. Any suggestions would be helpful.
