That's not what he's referring to, Rick. He means to have a folder or virtual drive on his computer that is directly linked to the files in his account (nothing stored locally, files accessed directly from the Dropbox servers through Explorer or Finder). Joe, Dropbox has stated in the past that they have no plans to…

That will work just fine, Philippa, and it's how I pre-populate Dropbox on a new computer. I install Dropbox on a new computer and immediately pause syncing or exit the client. I copy the Dropbox folder from the old computer to the new computer, replacing the new Dropbox folder that was created, then resume syncing.…

BTW, is anyone else experiencing terrible lag when typing a comment here in the forum? Also, I cannot paste any text in the comment box. Is that normal? No, and no. I do that regularly, like with your snippet above that I pasted in. You do have to right-click on the active line though (or use keyboard shortcuts). If you…

I have my Dropbox in a container that I can move around onto external drives, thumb drives, and the like. As long as I map it to the expected drive letter, Dropbox doesn't care what kind of media it is on. I've been using this approach for years. And in that scenario the computer thinks it's a local drive, which is why it…

Why would you say that? Dropbox maps to a drive letter and it doesn't care whether that letter is an internal drive, a thumb drive, an external drive, a virtual file container, or otherwise. Because that's what Dropbox (the company, not the software) has said all along. And yes, Dropbox (the software) cares... Yes, it's…

I have dropbox on an external drive and for one reason or other it was unlinked The fact that you have Dropbox on an external drive likely complicated the issue. Dropbox does not support external, networked or removable drives. Under the right conditions, data loss can occur.

Not using Dropbox, no. If the files are synced to your computer then you can probably find a third-party utility that can do a bulk rename on your files. [Moderator Note: This might be easier to accomplish now with the help of our naming conventions feature and the Dropbox Automations too]

You will need either a Business or Pro account with extended file history to recover files that have been deleted for more than 30 days. One clarification on the above... You must have already had a Business account or a Pro account with Extended Version History active at the time of deletion and continuously since.…

Will my files stay For a while, yes, but not indefinitely. and I just won't be able to upload anything else? Correct.
-
Referrals for Basic accounts are 500mb (1GB for Pro) and you can refer up to 32 people for a total of 16GB (32 GB for Pro).

You likely will not be able to claim the bonus space. You had to do so while the promotion was active, and it expired on April 30th of this year. You can try contacting Support to ask (use the links posted in the reply above yours), but I wouldn't get your hopes up.
-
They going to delete the extra files or what. Your files will not be deleted for being over quota, at least not for a while. I'm sure if you left them there forever Dropbox would eventually send you a notice, but they do not delete files just for going over your quota.

The promotion was not fake. It lasted several years and has finally come to an end. I believe it's only the Samsung promotion that has ended. The HTC, Dell, HP, etc., promotions are all still active as far as I know.
-
so promotion had been end? Yes. The promotion ended last month.
-
Is there any way that I get another chance of getting that free space? Not likely. The promotion actually expired last month.

I bought a new Samsung mobile device and logged in with the wrong dropbox user. Is there any chance I recover the space and get the promotion for the other account, the one that I had to link the device with? No. The first account that logs into the device gets the bonus space. There's no way to transfer that to another…

If my account was previously redeemed by Samsung promoted 48G, and after several years I bought a new Samsung, can I redeem a NEW Samsung promotion for the same account again? No, you can't. You can only claim the promotion once, even if you purchase a new device. Also, the Samsung promotion is ending on April 30th. *…

The promotion is valid only for devices that have the app pre-installed. From here: https://www.dropbox.com/help/297#terms Which Samsung devices are eligible for promotions? * Select Samsung Android smartphones and tablets that have the Dropbox application pre-loaded are eligible to receive promotional space.

I think it's a trick from DropBox to get more people to join, and give a silly excuses. There are no tricks. If you haven't been awarded the space then you've either missed a step, do not qualify or the device isn't eligible. * https://www.dropbox.com/help/4223

unfortunately I logged in the first time on my girlfriends samsung and got the 48 GB Extra. Any chance to move them to her Dropbox Account because it's her smartphone? No, unfortunately. The first account to log in gets the bonus space and it cannot be transferred to another account.
-
@Dennis: Dropbox does not remove the space earned through referrals (inviting friends). If space is being removed, then it's from a time-limited promotion that you were a part of (Samsung bonus, Space Race, etc.). @Marco: Contact the team admin for the business account. Ask them to contact Dropbox Support and ask to have…

Will I lose all my data ? No. Dropbox will not delete your files, even if you're over quota. If you do go over quota, syncing will stop, but your files are still accessible. What will I be reduced to ? The message you received should tell you that. If this is a reduction due to an expiring Samsung promotion, you'll likely…
-
@Tanya: Nothing will happen to your files. If you go over quota you won't be able to sync anymore until you're back below quota. Your files will remain in your account. @Pardalas: Yes, you'll still be able to download your files. You won't be able to add or update them.

Then my best guess is that you didn't receive it because your device was purchased second hand. Review the link that I posted with other possible explanations and failing that, contact Support.
