Thank you for the screenshot, that really clears it being a Dropbox notification. Looks like some app is moving files from your Dropbox folder that are marked as online-only (so they are just placeholders, without their contents being synced locally) to a location outside of the Dropbox folder. Dropbox sees that and it…

Hello @"CAB2k", In addition to the solution offered by Rich of moving that folder into your local Dropbox folder, you can also sync it without having to move it. That can be done using a third-party product called Boxifier (Windows only, no such thing for Mac that I know of). The nice thing about it is that you also get…

Hello @"Christinasilk", Could you please share a screenshot of the notification? Thanks, Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not affiliated with Dropbox. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Sure, here it is: https://syncmon.com Hope this helps, Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not affiliated with Dropbox. All opinions expressed here are my own.

I noticed the moderators removed part of my post “due to Community Guidelines”. Moderators, I genuinely want to understand what specific community guidelines were enforced here, since I just posted an offer to help free of charge, no strings attached, nothing promotional or commercial. Thanks, Andrew (DBoxTips)

Thank you for the details @"H. Hanyang". That is helpful because it means that Dropbox is crashing internally due to a known reason, as opposed to an external startup crash. I can help with further troubleshooting this for you or Dropbox support could assist you if you open a ticket. [Removed due to Community Guidelines]…

Hello @"H. Hanyang" Maybe I can help with this. Could you please send a screenshot of the error message "Dropbox has unexpectedly quit" to see how it looks visually? That could be a helpful indicator of what to do next. Thanks, Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not affiliated…

I use a recently-launched service called Syncmon. It does remote monitoring of Dropbox on Windows endpoints. Hope this helps. Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not affiliated with Dropbox. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Like @"Rich" mentioned, Boxifier works together with the Dropbox desktop app, because it extends its functionality. So both Dropbox desktop app and Boxifier need to be installed. Boxifier does not work on its own. Hope this helps, Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not…

Hello @"Chrille", When you make a folder online-only from the Dropbox context menu it makes the contents of the files in those folders to be online-only, but placeholders for them still appear in the Dropbox folder on your computer, just like you experienced. Was your expectation that by making the folder online-only the…

Do you mean the Dropbox app or the Boxifier app? If you mean the Dropbox app, it can backup your external/removable disk to Dropbox. If you mean the Boxifier app, it can sync (not just backup) folders from a local drive (for example your second disk D:), from an external/removable disk or from a network share/drive. Hope…

Hello @"Spike1982", From the video I notice Dropbox is indeed running, by looking at the bottom right of the screen and locating the Dropbox icon. Could you try clicking it and let us know here if anything happens? Hope this helps, Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not…

Hello @"FlexAssistance", Do you receive any error message when you try to install it again? Here to help, Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not affiliated with Dropbox. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Hello @"EttoreC", While that’s not possible directly with the Dropbox desktop app, it is possible using third party software that integrates with the Dropbox desktop application, like Boxifier (Windows only). Hope this helps, Andrew (DBoxTips) I am an individual contributor to the Dropbox Community forums, not affiliated…

Thank you for the details. I have an internal tool that that I use for this. I plan to tidy it up and release it for anyone who needs this. If you would like to get it sooner, please reach me directly by adding “.com” to my forum username and entering the resulting address in your browser. I will also update this thread…

Hello @"mendezcarlos", Can you share what you mean by “create an index or guide”? What kind of information would that guide contain? What would it look like? Trying to understand your need before I jump to suggesting solutions. Thanks, Andrew (DBoxTips)

Thank you for reporting back your results. To confirm (and to try reproducing this on my end): is this on Sonoma 14.6.1? Thanks, Andrew (DBoxTips)

We can do that in this case, but if possible we'd rather not force all Mac users to sync everything locally, so it would be better to automate it! Thanks, though. Apologies, from your initial post I wrongly assumed this a dedicated setup for one machine, not a software shipped to multiple users. Normally, opening a handle…

Hello, Would it work for you to right-click the Dropbox folder and pick the “Make available offline” option from the Dropbox context menu and from the Dropbox preferences to set new files to sync as offline? That would allow you to keep the existing app architecture. Hope this helps, Andrew (DBoxTips)
-
Since they have the cloud icon, that’s good. The “downloading” status can be confusing, but in your scenario (you checked folders in selective sync) it means it is just downloading the metadata needed to create the local folder structure and file placeholders. So you’re good, no need to worry. Hope this helps, Andrew…
-
Hello @"tob145", By default when setting up Dropbox on a new computer it should sync the folder structure and files within as “online-only”, so that you can browse the structure, but files stay online and don’t take up space on your local drive unless you open them or specifically make them available offline via the…

@"happychaps" wrote:When will we have the capability to select folders outside of the hierarchy shown? As other users have requested, I would like to pick any folders on my computer drive for automatic backup, and thought I was going to get this with the new backup. While no longer possible with Dropbox Backup, this is…

Welcome to the community @"Theresa", This forum can sometimes be a place filled with a little bit of tough love, but I like to think people posting here about their issues/puzzles with Dropbox care enough to take the time to do it (instead of giving up), so that’s a great thing. Keep the music playing and have a great time…

Happy to hear that @"TGD-Inc"! Thank you for crediting my above suggestion that the issue had to be fixed at the 3rd party app level, just removing the dot from the folder name via the website wasn’t enough. Although @"Megan" picked another reply as the solution, what matters is that your issue is resolved now. Thanks,…

Glad to hear it worked! Let’s hope the third-party app that manages that folder is not confused by the changed name and continues to create dated backups as subfolders inside that folder, so that it continues to work as expected. Thanks, Andrew (DBoxTips)
-
Thank you @"TGD-Inc", that finally solves the puzzle here. In Windows there is a limitation in that you cannot create folders ending in a dot. This is why Dropbox is not syncing that folder on your PC, while it is otherwise visible on the Dropbox website and in the mobile app. Since that folder is created by an application…
-
Thank you @"TGD-Inc". I have one more idea to try: 1. Navigate to to "eBound Backup" folder on your PC in File Explorer. 2. On your PC, create a subfolder inside the "eBound Backup" folder and give it with the same name as the subfolder of "eBound Backup" that is not syncing to the PC. 3. Wait for Dropbox to sync the newly…

Dropbox core stores and handles at least client_modified for folders, it just doesn't expose it via the API. You can confirm that by unchecking an older folder from your Dropbox account in selective sync settings so that it removes it locally, then checking it back to bring it back down. When you look at the creation date…
-
My guess is this not caused by invalid characters in file names, because based on the screenshots sent by @"TGD-Inc" the subfolders (which don't contain any restricted characters in their names) are not synced at all to the local folder, regardless of the files inside them. One last thing to try, @"TGD-Inc": if you go on…

Thank you for the details. 1. Could you please also send a screenshot of the contents of the “Apps” folder as seen on the PC when you navigate to it using the Windows File Explorer? 2. If you try to create a folder inside the “Apps” folder using the Dropbox website or mobile app, does it show on the PC? Does it show up in…
