This looks like the same case as the other users on this topic were running into. It's probably Dropbox wanting enable the kernel extension needed for Download-on-Demand. You may want to review the answers given earlier in this thread and decide whether you want to allow DoD on your machine or not. If so, then enable the…

Unfortunately, that's getting into the realm of long-term Product strategy, etc, where I am surely incapable of commenting on a public forum!

File Provider is Apple's API for syncing going forward on their newer OS versions, and replaces the use of legacy means for supporting download-on-demand. Dropbox users who have not yet opted into FP are running a version of sync that provides most, but not all of the functionality of Online-Only files. Even that level of…

The fixes were to a fairly arcane internal issue which would have affected a few, but not all external drive users. We had a difficult time reproducing the issue until we inserted some artificial failures to mimic certain possible end user scenarios I (things along the lines of "operation X happens to be in flight when the…

Updating this thread: we recently released some fixes for issues found in the external drive disconnection case (version v200 of Desktop client and above). We'd be interested in hearing whether issues are still persisting for anyone who had been affected previously.

The request for permission is actually macOS asking you whether you want to grant the permission that Dropbox is requesting. Pretty sure it is a one-time popup and after that, you won't get it again, whether or not you grant permission. If you don't grant permission, the DoD capability just won't be there, but you should…

I believe the kext (kernel extension) permission is probably granted once, and then macOS will subsequently load the kext without issue. What is Download on Demand? Download on Demand is our name for online-only files. With the Dropbox you are used to, all your files live on your computer, and are also syned over to other…

One thing we've seen that may be happening: if you are on our free plan, and a version of macOS prior to 12.5 (i.e. non-File Provider), we recently rolled out Downlod-on-Demand capability to you. DoD relies on a macOS kernel extension, and macOS definitely asks for your permission before enabling it. (Note: Dropbox for…

We hear what you're saying and continue to work on improvements for the File Provider implementation. Right now our work is mostly focused on improving scalability (getting sync to go faster and not run into issues at really high file counts), but we are also looking at how to best support external drives and a plethora of…

Glad to hear it!

@"hughH" thanks for the screenshot, this actually moved me along. There's definitely an issue with dragging and dropping to "Dropbox" in Favorites in the Sidebar. There is also a Locations section below Favorites in the Sidebar, which contains the same Dropbox folder (but with the Dropbox logo). I confirmed that dragging…

We're continuing to look into it, but having some difficulty reproducing the failure. I understand that sounds lame, since you are seeing it all the time, but it's not reproducing on our own machines at the moment. I saw something similar with a Team account, but that was related to team permissions, so I don't think it is…

I tried this and I found that it works for my personal Dropbox, but not my Team account. Is this possibly a team or enterprise Dropbox you're having the issue with? Also, I hear your rant and I identify with it. These changes are largely mandated by new OS interfaces that we need to conform to.
