Make sure that the documents you're trying to open in Word online are in .docx format. The older .doc format is not supported by Microsoft's Online apps. The same holds true for Excel and PowerPoint.

I doubt they becoming corrupted. LIkely a problem with the audio player you're using, especially if you're getting the same result in multiple browsers. Try a different audiop player.

There is no command line interface for Smart Sync, and the Dropbox API has no support for managing Smart Sync settings. The only way to manage Smart SYnc is through the Dropbox GUI.
