It's so sad to see Dropbox go down the drain due to incompetence. It all started with the amateurish acquisition and implementation of Boxcryptor. And now someone has apparently decided to annoy all (former) users by spamming them with notification emails...
-
Of course, zero-knowledge is a must, and private keys should only reside on your device. You will have to check this for your preferred service. Please let me know what's wrong with Electron. Thanks.

This latest incident confirms the importance of E2EE in all plans. Next time it'll probably be the cloud. And as we saw with the Microsoft incident, how can you be sure that the cloud has not already been compromised for months... https://www.heise.de/news/Digitale-Signatur-Datenleak-bei-Dropbox-Sign-9705355.html

It still says "End-to-end encryption" for all plans at Sync.com. But I wonder if they and pCloud meanwhile implemented Apples requirements for cloud services (CloudStorage folder). For me it's still OneDrive (for unencrypted content) and Filen.io for E2EE for more than a year now...
-
Thank you! So they meanwhile have at least 3 different price overview pages. Quite confusing...
-
Dear Andrea, I see two different overviews for available plans i.e. https://www.dropbox.com/plans and https://www.dropbox.com/business/plans-comparison I don't see any plan by the name "Advanced" as mentioned in your message. Furthermore the overviews or plan comparisons were obviously not yet updated as no plan shows the…

I'm glad you have your key. Since I use a Mac I cannot tell you exact details for Windows. May be you will need to delete the installed BC app and reinstall it. At first login you should get the option then.
-
First question: did you download your key from BC website before your free online acount was closed? If yes, you shall use it when you chose the option in your local BC app to proceed with a local account. That alternative option appears at login. If you don't have your key you won't be able to decrypt your files anymore.
-
thanks for the info/correction. So most probably I need to correct and limit my previous statement regarding the compatibility to MacOS 14 Sonoma. I tried to install BC 2.48 but got the error message that this version is not compatible with the OS. I didn't try BC version 3.x
-
Yes, actually this was well communicated by BC and hopefully everyone downloaded the keys in time. Another issue Mac users need to be aware of is that the BC app is not compatible with newer MacOS versions like Ventura or Sonoma. If you still need to decrypt files, you will need to have access to older MacOS versions or…

It remains a mystery why Secomba and Dropbox were so amateurish with the merger. They have completely ruined their image and no matter what products and plans they come up with in the future, I will never trust such amateurs again. I'm meanwhile used to and happy with my new structures and solutions.
-
Dropbox should have clarified a lot and made countless mistakes about this whole merger. You can't beat their dilettantism. I will never understand why they did everything in the worst possible way. And people still trust them with unencrypted data...🤦🏻♂️
-
This was never clearly communicated either, but reading between the lines I feel that such implemented encryption will really only be available for such business packages. I wonder how the owners of such business packages will encrypt their data in the meantime...
-
@"UnicormPink" Dropbox's plans were just explained here again by @"apfund" .i.e. that Boxcryptor will no longer be available as stand-alone solution (for other cloud services) but its technology will be used to implement a native E2E encryption into paid Dropbox packages. As mentioned here earlier and in at least one more…
-
The latest development with Microsofts "lost" masterkey confirms again how important it is to use zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption for cloud servers. Providers that don't offer this technology for all(!) plans as a standard, can no longer be considered as trustworthy and professional. The poor communication and actions…
-
I agree to both of your comments. It is more and more unforgivable that FB/BC did not leave everything as it was, before presenting a new final product. It confirms total incompetence by the responsible persons. Andrea refused to comment to this specific question in all her comments still until today. It is ridiculous that…
-
@"NX81" for me personally I saw disadvantages because without identifying files by their names I cannot use the native OneDrive app, Google Drive app, etc., and its features anymore to organize my files. So it's not very comfortable or even impossible to use the features of the native cloud apps and you are completely…
-
@"NX81" keep in mind that Cryptomator uses file name encryption...
-
filen.io is relatively new but I'm a very happy and satisfied user of it for some months now for the reasons mentioned in this thread. Best cloud for me to replace the DB/BC couple and after testing everything else.
-
no idea why I made my last reply the other day in German language first. Sorry for that. Probably the website was automatically translated and mislead me. I could finally edit the post on my Mac and corrected it.
-
@"bookbean1" I don't know AxCrypt, but on their website it says under "Download"... "Other cloud drives like iCloud, DropBox, OneDrive and others will be supported in upcoming versions...". So this is still not a solution for a local Dropbox at the moment. What gets encrypted when and where, and whether it is local…
-
@"Steveme"The extra charges for encryption alone made pCloud incompetitive for me. And another reason why I did not choose this service is the fact that they still have not implemented Apple's API requirements. They are working on it, but sooner or later it will mean similar and significant changes as with Dropbox. It's…
-
@"Steveme" Beautiful, precise analysis. And I assume by end-to-end encryption you mean client-side (zero-knowledge) encryption. However, OneDrive does not yet offer this, as Microsoft keeps the private keys on its server. I found my peace with the minimal and affordable German cloud service Filen.io.
-
Well, I asked the BC team last year if they were going to offer something new and similar after Boxcryptor was discontinued. I even asked if it was possible to get the rights to create a clone. All I got were automated messages. We may never know what made BC adapt the poor communication behavior of Dropbox and why they…
-
@"njwolfegang" you received an e-mail from Dropbox or Boxcryptor? I don't get your point here yet...
-
@"HRS2403" glad you managed to use it properly now...on a long term you should definitely look for a new solution but there is and never was a reason to panic just because Boxcryptor ended the service for unpaid plans. Interesting to see whether encrypted Boxcryptor files will be later compatible with Dropbox's new…
-
@"HRS2403" yes, most probably another valid point why Boxcryptor is no good solution anymore cause you don't want to face a situation when you suddenly can't decrypt your files, for what reason ever. I downloaded the last .dmg-file but I doubt that a clean installation is possible without Boxcryptor's servers being…
-
@"HRS2403" it works well, I also tested it offline. But it sounds that you probably do it the wrong way testing somehow on the desktop. All you have to do is switch to local account in the BC settings, using the downloaded key when being asked for. Afterwards everything works on the fly same as before. You have your BC…
-
@"HRS2403"I agree with what you wrote. I was using Boxcryptor for free because I got enough devices with affiliate links. My Dropbox plan was $9.99/month (2TB). Even if soon available at Dropbox Business, I would not be willing to pay an additional ten dollars a month or even more just for the encryption. Simply because I…
-
@"chrissos"Thanks for your comments. Yes, just in case this is not clear to everyone, even non-paying Boxcryptor customers can still use Boxcryptor with a local account if they downloaded their keys before January 31st. However, it was not an option for me to use an encryption tool that is no longer officially supported…
