(Kind of amazed that I today can't find anything when search on Preparing to move [to] … Can't believe I'm the only one having this problem. )

Been using Dropbox since 2010 and it has had it's ups and downs and definitely feel it has worsened user experience since Dropbox changed to Apples file-provider services in 2022-2023.

Saying this as I have very extensive experience of using Dropbox and to the larger degree, quite positive experiences.

But, since a few weeks ago when I updated my system to macOS 26.4, I've started getting "Preparing to move to"… dialogs very frequently. And dialogs that stays up for seconds, sometimes quite a few.

Just run the problem in ChatGTP which has lots of explanations including recommendation to move files in terminal…. Not tried anything yet.

Posting this here to see what others has come up with. And hopefully also some comments from Dropbox the company itself.

Users C Drive is low on Space. There is another D Drive installed that has more than enough space.

When I attempted to just move the Dropbox folder, it told me it couldnt because the Backups were on a different Drive. So I stopped backups of the folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads), Did what I needed to do to move them to the D Drive (Location Tab under Properties), and then reinstalled Dropbox to have it setup the Dropbox folder on the D Drive.

After Dropbox finishes syncing, I then try to backup Desktop, Documents, and Downloads, but it tells me it is unable to do so because the folders are not in the default location. If I move a folder back to its default location (C:), it tells me it cant back it up because Dropbox and the folder are on Different Drives.

What the heck

Why is dropbox unable to back up default folders if they have been moved? Is there no way around this?

I have been a user on a church's account for years. They pay for dropbox and upload videos into their folder and I go on to their account for purposes of downloading the video for use elsewhere. This has been the case for at least 4 years. Now I can't access their folder anymore because dropbox says that my account is out of space, even though there are 0 files in my account. This doesn't make sense. The church is already paying for the space. I am not doing anything except downloading files from a folder that is being paid for by someone else. What reason would I need to upgrade my account?

Question or Issue
I’ve had the same “Updating 42 files” on my monitor tab icon for over a year. after syncing new addition, it reverts to this notice. There is nowhere I can find what or where these 42 files are to be found. With the disaster of the mixed main filer location since it was moved into the Library, where I now have two folders residing, Things are getting more complicated and less reliable, a situation that seems to go hand in hand everywhere I encounter ‘more complicated.’ In Preferences>Sync>Dropbox folder updates “You are using Dropbox on File Provider. To opt out ...

1st question: how to get rid of “Updating 42 files

2nd question; how to have a single Library folder? Do I have to compare the two folders, file at a time? Cuz that would be a real PIA and I could lose data as several people in this forum have already experienced. files copied with zero info.

3rd question. Does anybody try these new systems out in real world situations?

Issue
While organising and renaming files in Finder, I accidentally typed the \ character in one of the file names. I corrected it almost immediately, but not before Dropbox had registered it as a file that it couldn't upload.

Now I'm getting a constant message about how "1 file is unable to sync" and telling me to remove the special character.

But that file effectively doesn't exist anymore (at least not with the faulty name). I therefore can't "view" it or "fix" it. And there doesn't appear to be a way of getting Dropbox to drop the matter.

How can I get Dropbox to dismiss this now non-existent issue?

(The file with the corrected name is syncing just fine, I can view it on Dropbox[dot]com, etc.)

  MacOS Tahoe 26.3.1 (a)
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
244.4.6580

In advanced, I'm sorry for my long text and spelling errors)

I have a shared Dropbox with my colleges, and I work from home. Earlier this week I was working in InDesign, and it crashed while I was working. A message said it was a serious error, but no info what the error was about. (I have attached several screenshots below) Anyway, I started InDesign again, but the document I was working on could not be opened, because it was damaged. I work as a freelance book designer, but luckily for me I was only working on a book cover, and not the inside of the book. It was annoying, but not the end of the world.

This was just the beginning. Now every single time I open an InDesign document from Dropbox, all the links is just shown as blank, like there is nothing there. It's just like a white new document, with nothing there, only the text. Nothing is linked anymore, and I have to link every singe images again. Let's say I have 50 images in a folder, it doesn't link everything at once, which is crazy annoying and extremely time consuming. Sometimes when I open a document in InDesign it seems fine for one second, but then all the images shows up like "crazy art" (screenshot 2) After I link an image, it seems to be okay the next time I open the document, luckily. But I have a lot of book projects and it's a crazy amount of time fixing everything manually.

I also get weird messages when opening a document (the bottom screenshots)

It also seems to be a problem when I have a document open, and want to edit a picture. I choose to open the picture in Photoshop, and edit there. When saving the document, it usually update the file in InDesign automatically, but not now. I guess it's just a part of the same problem.

I have no idea what to do to fix the problem. All Indesign documents on my computer is fine, so the problem is only between Dropbox and Indesign, and not InDesign alone. I always work with the documents/folders (available offline) and I have never had a problem with this before the crash.

I have already contacted Dropbox customer service. After a lot of back and forth, they said the problem is with Adobe. Then I contacted Adobe (which has terrible customer service) and they told me the problem is Dropbox. So here I am, with no clue on how to fix the problem.

I have restarted Indsign and Dropbox, but nothing changed. I don't know what will happen with new documents placed in dropbox yet, but fingers crossed the issue will not effect new work. Time will show after the Holiday.

Happy Stressfull Easter to me I guess :P

I’m experiencing a persistent issue where Dropbox will not start correctly on macOS. The app launches background processes, but the UI never appears, the menu bar icon does not show, and I cannot open Dropbox preferences.

System Information

Device: MacBook Pro 14-inch (Apple silicon)

Chip: Apple M5

Memory: 32 GB

macOS: Tahoe 26.3.1

Dropbox version: 244.4.6580

Behavior

* Dropbox processes are running in Activity Monitor and via terminal

* No menu bar icon appears

* No UI window opens

* Preferences cannot be accessed

* Files may partially sync in the background

Error Message

"Couldn't start Dropbox. This may be a temporary error. A provider with ID com.getdropbox.dropbox.fileprovider was found, but is in the process of being invalidated."

Troubleshooting Performed

* Full uninstall and reinstall of Dropbox multiple times

* Deleted all Dropbox-related folders:

~/Library/Application Support/Dropbox

~/.dropbox

~/Library/Group Containers/G7HH3F8CAK.com.getdropbox.dropbox.sync

* Restarted the Mac multiple times

* Reset Finder, fileproviderd, and bird

* Reset SystemUIServer (menu bar)

* Verified processes via terminal (ps aux)

* Manually launched Dropbox binary

Key Observation

When I create a new macOS user account, Dropbox works perfectly:

* Menu bar icon appears

* UI loads normally

* No errors

This suggests the issue is isolated to my primary user environment.

Request

I need assistance fully resetting or clearing the File Provider integration and user-level Dropbox state so Dropbox can launch correctly in my main user account.

Hey all, I've been beating my head against the wall for a week now trying to figure out why my Dropbox Finder extension wasn't working. I don't have File Provider and really didn't want to set it up, plus I'm apparently not a candidate.

I'm not sure exactly what caused this state. It was either a recent update or some aborted FileProvider migration. What I do know after much troubleshooting (thanks Claude Code, who wrote the breakdown below which I edited) is what the broken state looks like and how to fix it.

Follow these instructions at your own peril.

The Problem

The Dropbox Finder extension stops working and can't be re-enabled:

No sync status badges (green checkmarks, blue sync icons) in Finder

No right-click context menu options ("Make Available Offline", "Make Online Only", "Copy Dropbox Link", etc.)

Smart Sync is unusable — you can't toggle files/folders between online-only and local

The extension toggle in System Settings > Login Items & Extensions keeps turning itself off immediately after you enable it

Running pluginkit -e use -i com.getdropbox.dropbox.garcon (even with sudo) doesn't stick

Reinstalling Dropbox doesn't fix it

You may also see "Dropbox Finder Extension" listed as a File Provider extension in System Settings, which is wrong — it should be a Finder Sync extension

The Broken State

A ghost FileProvider domain registration gets stuck in ~/Library/Application Support/FileProvider/. You can confirm this is your issue:

# Check if garcon is disabled
pluginkit -mDAD -p com.apple.FinderSync 2>/dev/null | grep dropbox
# Shows: -    com.getdropbox.dropbox.garcon  (the - means disabled)

# Check if a ghost FileProvider domain exists
plutil -p ~/Library/Application\ Support/FileProvider/com.getdropbox.dropbox.fileprovider/Domains.plist 2>/dev/null

If the Domains.plist exists and shows something like:

"Disconnected" => true
"DisconnectionReason" => "This is an unlinked Dropbox"
"Path" => "FPFS_SHOULD_NOT_BE_USED"
"Enabled" => true

...then you have a ghost domain. It's registered and "Enabled" but completely non-functional.

What this causes: When Dropbox starts, it sees a FileProvider domain is registered and enabled. It assumes FileProvider is handling Finder integration, so it deliberately disables garcon (the Finder Sync extension). But the FileProvider domain is broken/disconnected, so neither system works. You get no Finder integration at all.

Why reinstalling doesn't fix it: This directory is managed by macOS, not by Dropbox. Uninstalling and reinstalling Dropbox — even Dropbox's "advanced reinstall" that removes ~/.dropbox, ~/Library/DropboxHelperTools, etc. — does not touch this directory. The ghost domain persists, and the next Dropbox install sees it and disables garcon again.

You may also see ghost mounts appearing in ~/Library/CloudStorage/ (e.g., Dropbox-YourTeam or conflicted copies with timestamps in the name). These reappear even after deletion because the FileProvider domain is still registered.

The Fix

Make sure Dropbox is completely quit before starting.

# 1. Quit Dropbox
osascript -e 'tell application "Dropbox" to quit' 2>/dev/null
sleep 2
pkill -f Dropbox
sleep 2

# 2. Remove the ghost FileProvider domain registration
# This is the key step that a normal reinstall misses
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/FileProvider/com.getdropbox.dropbox.fileprovider/

# 3. Kill the FileProvider daemon so macOS picks up the change
sudo killall fileproviderd

# 4. Disable the FileProvider plugin, enable garcon
sudo pluginkit -e ignore -i com.getdropbox.dropbox.fileprovider
sudo pluginkit -e use -i com.getdropbox.dropbox.garcon

# 5. Optionally clean up ghost CloudStorage mounts
# (replace "Dropbox-YourTeam" with your actual mount name)
sudo rm -rf ~/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox-YourTeam*/

# 6. Start Dropbox
open /Applications/Dropbox.app

Verify after ~30 seconds:

pluginkit -mDAD 2>/dev/null | grep dropbox

Expected output:

+    com.getdropbox.dropbox.garcon(...)        # + means ENABLED
-    com.getdropbox.dropbox.fileprovider(...)  # - means disabled (what we want)
+    com.getdropbox.dropbox.TransferExtension(...)

Your right-click Smart Sync options and sync badges should be back, and should survive Dropbox restarts.

How We Figured This Out

I had Claude compare the plugin state between two Macs — one where Dropbox Finder integration worked and one where it didn't:

Working Mac: garcon + (enabled), fileprovider registered but not active, no FileProvider domain in Application Support, no CloudStorage ghost mounts

Broken Mac: garcon - (disabled), fileprovider + (active), FileProvider domain present showing "Disconnected" and "unlinked Dropbox", ghost CloudStorage mounts that kept reappearing

The working Mac had Dropbox syncing to an external drive, where FileProvider can't operate. So no FileProvider domain was ever created, and garcon worked fine.

The broken Mac had Dropbox on the internal drive, and at some point a FileProvider domain was registered. Even though it was in a broken/disconnected state, its mere existence caused Dropbox to disable garcon on every startup.

Removing the ghost domain registration was the fix. This is something a normal Dropbox reinstall (or even Dropbox's "advanced reinstall") does not do.

Notes

This keeps Dropbox in "legacy" mode (syncing to a folder in your home directory rather than through ~/Library/CloudStorage/). This is preferable for workflows that need files to stay reliably local — for example, video editing with Premiere Pro, where FileProvider can silently evict media files and cause "media offline" errors.

If Dropbox attempts another FileProvider migration in the future, the ghost domain could return. If garcon stops working again, check ~/Library/Application Support/FileProvider/com.getdropbox.dropbox.fileprovider/ first.

Tested on macOS Tahoe 26.x with Dropbox Business v244.4.6580 on Apple Silicon, but the issue isn't version-specific — the ghost domain mechanism has been the same since macOS introduced FileProvider.

Won't let me share my own files due to apparent phishing content? I need to copy and share links to my folders and files in order to share to clients and I keep getting an error message saying you have interrupted my sharing activity. Any help would be appreciated to get my account unlocked from sharing files please.

Question or Issue
Hello, I cannot open embedded word documents in Excel spreadsheet, in Dropbox on my Samsung S24 Mobile phone. The spreadsheet is fully workable on my mobile, excepting when I press the cell containing the embedded (not linked) word document., it only identifies the cell (eg B2) rather than open the embedded fileit says "This version of Excel doesn't support interacting with embedded files" When I open the offline folder it works perfectly on my laptop

Also, sometimes when I open the file on my mobile, it comes up with "open with" and when I press that, it goes straight into the spreadsheet.

The screen shot shows an unfilled circle, whereas the others are all filled?

I cannot find in Dropbox application, where I can upload a newer version of Excel?

Hope you can help, please

Kind regards Doug

I need to restore my system due to a problem with my Windows/Fonts folder.

However, whenever I try to run System Restore, after about 20 minutes Windows restarts with the following error message:
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/8cs9ufypm9f2ntom1jvin/temp-1.png?rlkey=ny26ffpl7ssueq13h1lh67duz&st=wzq01mjv&dl=0

(I tried posting the above url as a link but I got a message saying that the link contained invalid html! But I didn't write any html, I just used the Insert Link button. Why doesn't the Insert Link button create links that can be posted?)

As the error message was referring to a Dropbox folder, and I don't need Dropbox to be restored, I need my Fonts folder to be restored, I tried uninstalling the Dropbox desktop app for Windows and running System Restore again - but I got the same error message.

I then tried deleting the Dropbox folder from my hard drive, and running System Restore again - but I still got the same error message.

So how can I restore my syste?

I have a hunch that the problem might be somehow related to the fact that I upgraded Dropbox for Windows at the time of the last automatic restore point. But how can I get round it?

It is extremely serious if the Dropbox upgrade has somehow made it impossible to run System Restore. How can I fix this?
